HAMILTON – In the opening game of ECAC Hockey play, Colgate women's hockey dropped a 3-0 decision to St. Lawrence in Starr Rink on Friday afternoon.
"It wasn't the start we wanted," Colgate head coach Greg Fargo said. "I thought we were doing some good things early in the first period but one just got past our goaltender, that normally she makes a save on, so that was a tough one to rebound from. Our response wasn't that great after that and then to have them come back and get another one on us hurt a little. We've got to be better to be able to respond to some adversity in those situations. We will learn from that, move on and get better for tomorrow."
Colgate (2-5-0, 0-1-0 ECAC) was led by Taylor Volpe, who notched five shots throughout the contest. Assistant captain Jocelyn Simpson also added four shots to the Raiders' total. Ashlynne Rando and Susan Allen split time in net with Allen handling the majority of work. Allen grabbed 24 saves while Rando tallied five.
St. Lawrence (2-5-0, 1-0-0 ECAC) saw Alex Moore, Kayla Raniwsky, and Mel Desrochers all record markers in the victory. Carmen MacDonald earned the win and registered 23 saves, including a game-high 11 stops in the final frame.
The Raiders had a great chance on net in the opening period when Simpson found Miriam Drubel in the left faceoff circle. The junior fired one on net but the Saint's goalie push it aside and away from the goal.
St. Lawrence took the early advantage just 1:33 into the period after Desrochers's marker. At the top of the left faceoff circle, Desrochers saw an opening and riffled one towards goal. The puck sailed past Rando stick side for the game's first goal.
Colgate looked to answer when Vople blasted a wrist shot on net with 12 minutes left. MacDonald, however, made a great stop to come up with the save.
The Saints extended their lead to 2-0 on a fast break opportunity with 10:11 remaining in the period. Raniwsky started the attack by streaking down center ice with the puck. She played the puck to Rylee Smith, before quickly getting it back and shooting glove side past Rando for her second goal of the season.
Colgate started the middle frame on a power play after St. Lawrence was called for checking in the closing minutes of the first period. Through their tightened defensive efforts, the Saints were able to deflect any Raider attack on net during the man-up opportunity.
Junior Allen, who had come in for relief as Colgate netminder, made a stellar save to push a Smith shot to the side of the goal a few minutes later.
Melissa Kueber quickly tried to answer on the opposite side of the ice when she broke free towards goal but MacDonald made another good stop to keep Colgate off the scoreboard.
With under two minutes to play in the middle period the Raiders were called for checking, awarding the Saints an extra man opportunity. After working the puck around the blue line Smith sent it over to Dayle Wilkinson on the wing, who fired one on net. Her shot was blocked but fell at the stick of Moore and before Allen was able to fall on it she place it past the junior, lifting the Saint's to a 3-0 lead.
In the final frame Colgate was given two man-up chances but were unable to find the back of the net even after solid attempts on goal.
The Raiders continued to put pressure on the Saints in the closing minutes of the game.
Katie Case notched Colgate's last real look on net with less than two minutes to play. `Kueber wrapped around the back of the goal before finding Case between the faceoff circles. The junior shot towards goal but MacDonald stood strong again coming up with the save to ultimately secure her shutout.
Colgate went 0-for-4 on the power play while St. Lawrence converted on one of its four chances. The Saints outshot the Raiders 32-23.
Colgate is back on the ice tomorrow hosting #5/5 Clarkson at 3 p.m. in Starr Rink.
