ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Colgate women's hockey team took on a tough RIT team Friday night and dropped a 2-0 decision at Bill Gray's Regional Iceplex.
"There were a lot of parts of today's game that we liked," Colgate head coach Greg Fargo said. "For the most part in the first and third period, we controlled a lot of the play, especially down low in their end. We had some good looks on the power play unfortunately we just didn't cash in on it.
"I thought defensively we were pretty strong tonight but those first 10 minutes in the second period we were on our heels a little bit more than we wanted to be. As long as we can come out and play on our toes and put a 60-minute game together opposed to a 50-minute one I think we will like the result a lot better tomorrow than tonight."
Colgate (1-4) was led by Jocelyn Simpson with five shots on the night. Taylor Craig and Melissa Kueber added three shots each while Susan Allen pushed aside 20 shots as the Raiders netminder.
RIT (3-3-0) saw goals from Mackenzie Stone and Lauren Klein, who both notched their first of the season. Ali Binnington made 24 stops including a game-high 11 in the first frame.
After a scoreless opening period it was the Raiders who held the advantage on shots at 11-4. Colgate had two man-up opportunities throughout the period but were unable to tally a goal. Simpson and Craig led the Raiders during the power plays with two shots each.
RIT also notched a great scoring chance at the 12:20 mark in the period. Brittany St. James and Katie Hubert found themselves on a two-on-one with defenseman Megan Wickens. St. James sent the puck over to Hubert, who one-timed it on net. Allen came up with a huge save to push the puck aside, keeping the game goalless.
Early in the middle frame the Raiders were called for interference and hooking, which gave RIT a 5-on-3 power play. Colgate was able to kill off one of their penalties before the Tigers converted on the extra man opportunity, taking the 1-0 lead.
A minute later, Colgate had a chance to equalize when the Tigers were called for checking. The Raiders rattled off a few good chances including a dangerous pass from Kueber to the front of the net but Colgate wasn't able to put it away.
At the 9:48 mark, the Tigers extended their advantage to 2-0 following Klein's goal. The rookie saw an opening through traffic and fired one from the point past the left shoulder of Allen.
RIT tightened up its defense in the final frame not allowing the Raiders to get open looks. Colgate's best chance came with 2:30 left in the game. The Raiders pulled the goalie allowing for a 6-on-4 after the Tigers were called for slashing. Rachel Walsh sent the puck in from the left wing to Stephanie Giannopoulos, who was in front of the net, but the senior couldn't find it with her stick to get a good shot off.
Despite some good chances in the closing minutes, the Tigers held strong to secure the victory.
These two teams take the ice again on Saturday for a rematch at 7 p.m. in Ritter Arena for the final contest of this two-game set.
