HAMILTON – Sophomore
Miriam Drubel grabbed her fifth goal of the season as the Colgate women's ice hockey team skated to a 1-1 tie with St. Lawrence on Saturday afternoon.
“I give full credit to our team today; everyone played hard for that point tonight,” Raiders head coach
Greg Fargo said. “Overall it was a positive step for our group over this tough weekend, against two very good opponents.”
Colgate (6-14-3, 1-8-3 ECAC) scored its lone goal at the 7:21 mark in the second period. Drubel's unassisted goal came while the Raiders had a player in the penalty box. The goal was her third short-handed finish this season, with the first two coming against Princeton and Cornell.
Ashlynne Rando pushed away 29 shots in her 65 minutes of play, including 11 during the middle period.
“Every point along the way from here on out is meaningful, and our team deserved a point tonight,” Fargo added. “We hope to build on this moving forward.”
Throughout the game, Colgate was able to kill off four power play chances by the Saints.
St. Lawrence (13-9-2, 8-3-1 ECAC) saw Kelly Sabatine knock in the tying goal just 7:57 into the final frame. Rylee Smith and Abbey McRae were awarded assists on the play. Carmen MacDonald made 25 saves in the contest. She had two big periods for the Saints, grabbing 10 saves in the first and second to keep the game within reach.
Neither team was able to score a goal in the first stanza, however the Raiders held the advantage on scoring opportunities. Midway through the period
Taylor Volpe tried to put the Raiders up 1-0 on a shot but was blocked by Brooke Fernandez. Just a few seconds later
Melissa Kueber fired a shot on net but yet again the Saints had an answer as MacDonald came up with the save.
The second period started off like the first one ended with both goalies anchoring their respective teams with key saves. After being booked for interference, Colgate gave the Saints a power play opportunity. The Raiders would be the ones to convert however as Drubel put one in past MacDonald to give Colgate the 1-0 advantage.
In the final stanza, St. Lawrence would put the pressure on the Raiders defense and finally grab the tying goal. Sabatine notched her 12th goal of the season at the 7:57 mark to equalize at 1-all.
At the end of regulation the score remained tied sending the game into overtime. While the Saints had the advantage on the shots in the OT, neither team was able to grab the game-winning goal.
The Raiders have now reached overtime in three of their last five games. In those three overtime games they have gone 2-0-1. Colgate returns to the ice Friday when they travel to Brown for a matchup with the Bears. The game is set for a 7 p.m. puck drop. The Raiders follow up Friday's game with another away league game against Yale on Saturday at 4 p.m.
