MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Colgate women's hockey drops a hard fought game to Minnesota 7-0, Friday night at Ridder Arena.
The Raiders dropped to the defending national champions in their first regular season game of 2012-13.
Colgate (0-1) – was led by
Jocelyn Simpson and
Jenna Klynstra who had four shots in the game.
Susan Allen made 42 saves on the day.
Minnesota (1-0) – was led by Hannah Brandt who earned a hat trick in the game. The Gophers also saw two goals from Becky Kortum, and one goal from Amanda Kessel and Mira Jalosui. Raty Noora had 18 saves.
"There are a lot of positives to take from tonight's game against Minnesota," head coach
Greg Fargo said. " When we played our sysrems we saw results. For 40 minutes we were in a good hockey game. We stepped away from our game plan in the third period and they opened up the score. I was proud of our play in the first forty minute."
Minnesota scored eight minutes into the game giving the Gophers the lead early into the game. Just a few minutes later, the Raiders were able to get two huge saves from Allen both on breakaways, keeping the score at 1-0.
Simpson looked to equalize with seven minutes left in the first period. She broke free through the Gopher defense taking a great shot on goal. Noora was able to come up with the big save.
While Colgate only had five shots in the period, all five were potential scoring opportunities.
Throughout the rest of the first period Allen was able to control the rebounds and keep the puck out of the net for the Raiders. The period ended with the Gophers leading 1-0.
Minnesota opened up the second period pressuring the Raider defense. Colgate had some quality chances at net but were unable to put them away against the NCAA Champions. Allen had another huge period for the Raiders stopping 10 shots on goal.
Throughout the second period, the Gophers were able to score two goals extending the lead to 3-0 with two goals from Brandt.
During the final period Minnesota was able to notch three more goals on the Raiders. Despite playing a good game, Colgate would eventually fall giving them their first loss of the season.
The Raiders will be back on the ice tomorrow against Minnesota to finish out the two-game series at 4:05 p.m. (Central Time) in Ridder Arena.
