HAMILTON, N.Y. (2/18/12)
– The Colgate women's hockey team concluded its 2011-12 season on Saturday afternoon with a 1-0 setback to Clarkson in Starr Rink.

Despite holding the game scoreless in the first two periods, Clarkson was able to find the game-winning goal early in the third frame to secure the win over the Raiders. Senior goaltender Kimberly Sass had an impressive performance in net with a 38 saves.

In the first period, both teams came out playing a pretty even game with Clarkson holding a slight shooting advantage. Things turned around at the 2:27 when the Golden Knights had an interference penalty called against them, allowing Colgate to find its shooting momentum in the first power play advantage of the game. The teams continued to play aggressively throughout the period, resulting in a pair of penalties being called on each team, however despite accumulating four extra skater opportunities between them, neither one could score.

The second period was identical to the first with both teams playing a very fast-paced and physical game. The Raiders had two power play opportunities while Clarkson had four, one of which had carried over from the first stanza. However, like before, neither team could capitalize in the 20-minute period. Colgate's closest attempt in the period came in the ninth minute during a power play for the Golden Knights when junior Brittany Phillips picked up the puck on a fast break and went 1-on-1 with the goalie with the chance of scoring a short-handed goal but goalie Erica Howe was able to block the shot with the tip of her skate to keep the score tied at 0-0.

With the game still scoreless, both teams came out looking to score the opening goal of the game that could easily become the game-winner. Unfortunately for the Raiders, it was Clarkson that was able to break the 40-minute dry spell with a goal just 1:34 into the frame to take a 1-0 lead. Determined to end its season with the a win, Colgate continued to attack the Golden Knights' net in search of an equalizer, coming close on a couple of opportunities but was denied by Howe. The Raiders came close to scoring again with less than nine minutes left when Phillips fired a laser that hit the pipe but it appeared that luck was on Clarkson's side, as the Golden Knights survived one scoring attempt after another from Colgate. The quick tempo lasted the rest of the period as both teams rushed up and down the ice in search of a goal, but at the end of yet another exciting period, it was Clarkson the was able to skate away with the 1-0 win.

The team concludes the season with a 10-21-2 overall record and a 5-15-2 mark in ECAC Hockey play, finishing 10th in the league. The team honored seniors Kimberly Sass, Amanda Kirwan, Heidi Peterson and Kristi-Lyn Pollock after their final collegiate game.
