POTSDAM, N.Y. –
Melissa Kueber's game-winning goal at the 12:39 mark in the third period lifted the Colgate women's ice hockey team over No. 2 ranked Clarkson Saturday afternoon in Cheel Arena.

“I couldn't be happier for our players after tonight's win against a very good Clarkson team,” head coach Greg Fargo said after the win. “It was a great team win and an excellent way to end the first half of the season.”

Colgate (4-11-2) earned themselves a two-goal lead against the nationally ranked Golden Knights with less than five minutes to play in the game.  Kueber's goal gives her four on the season while senior captain Jenna Klynstra put away her third. Ashlynne Rando, the rookie from Sugarland, Texas had a breakout game in net for the Raiders making 36 saves.

“We came out in the first period and really executed our game plan,” he added. “As the game went on, we stuck with it and played a composed game. We played comfortably with the lead, which was a great improvement in itself from last night's game.”

The Raiders handed Clarkson its first ECAC Hockey loss this season, after the Golden Knights had gone 7-0 up until Saturday's game. Colgate also ended Clarkson's five game winning streak, one of those wins coming Friday against No. 3 ranked Cornell.

The Golden Knights fall to 13-3-0 on the season but did see a late goal by Jamie Lee Rattray, giving her 14 on the year. Erica Howe grabbed 18 saves in the game.

Throughout the first period, Colgate had the better of the scoring chances. They would take advantage of one of those chances just six minutes into the game.  After Miriam Drubel couldn't convert on a close range shot, Kueber recovered the puck for the Raiders. She slipped a pass between two Clarkson defenders to Klynstra in front of the net. Howe was unable to get to the opposite side of the goal before she put it away, giving the Raiders the early 1-0 lead.

Rando made an astounding 17 saves in the second period, stopping every Clarkson shot, keeping her shutout alive. The Golden Knights almost equalize mid-way through the period after Shelby Nisbet's shot got past Rando, but hit the post bouncing back into play. The Colgate defense, anchored by Rando stayed strong not conceding the tying goal even after a 17-5 shot advantage in the period.

Colgate extended its lead, which was the eventual game-winner after Kueber redirected a shot from Megan Wickens. The puck sailed over the stick side shoulder of Howe at the 12:39 mark in the final frame.

The No. 2 ranked team didn't go away however as they cut the lead in half with less than five minutes to play. Clarkson was given a power play opportunity after the Raiders were called for checking. Brittany Styner took the initial shot that appeared to hit the crossbar. Fortunately for Clarkson the puck fell right at the stick of Jamie Lee Rattray, who put it away to give the Golden Knights some life late in the game.

Even after pulling their goalie, giving Clarkson the extra player, the Raiders were able to keep fighting and grab the upset win.

Colgate will head into the holiday with an impressive win against a very tough opponent. They will be back on the ice at the end of the month in an exhibition game against the Nepean Wildcats at 1 p.m. in Starr Rink.
