HAMILTON – Junior
Taylor Volpe scored two of Colgate's three goals Friday night, but it wasn't enough for the women's ice hockey team as they fell 4-3 to St. Lawrence.
“We played with a lot of desire tonight,” head coach
Greg Fargo said. “Again, there were many positives to draw upon.”
Colgate (3-11-2) led twice throughout the game but saw the Saints battle back each time. Volpe scored her third and fourth goal of the season giving the Raiders an early two-goal lead.
Miriam Drubel added to the Colgate scoring grabbing her fourth goal of the season 37 seconds into the third period. Rookie
Ashlynne Rando grabbed 25 saves in the game.
“Moving forward, we have to learn to play strong with a lead,” Fargo added. “Our attention to the smaller details has to be solid regardless of the score.”
St. Lawrence (8-6-1) used two power play opportunities to tie and then eventually win the game. The Saints saw Kailee Heidersbach score two, one of them being the game-winner at the 13:10 mark in the final period. St. Lawrence also saw Abbey McRae and Rylee Smith notch goals. Carmen MacDonald made the start in net for the home team and pushed aside 24 shots.
The Raiders came out to a quick start scoring just 1:39 into the game.
Jocelyn Simpson found Volpe, who fired a shot over MacDonald's should for the early lead. She would extend Colgate's lead to 2-0 off a redirection at the 13:24 mark. The play originated from
Megan Wickens and
Taylor Craig.
With 11.6 seconds left in the first frame, Heidersbach cut the Raider lead in half after she earned three different opportunities at net. She fired three shots right in a row before one slipped past Rando.
The Saints tied the game at the 15:55 mark in the second period. Freshman Abbey McRae scored her eighth of the season on a rebound off a shot from Kelly Sabatine.
The third period would see Colgate take back the lead, this time just 37 seconds into the period. Drubel tallied her fourth of the year and was assisted by Wickens and senior captain
Jenna Klynstra.
In a hard fought final frame, the Saints came fighting back, tying the game with 13 minutes to play on a power play goal. Senior Brooke Fernandez took a shot that ricocheted off the post, and fell at the foot of Smith, who put it away.
The eventual game-winner started after Colgate was called for checking, giving the Saints a power play opportunity. They took advantage of the extra player when Heidersbach put the rebound in off Mel Desrocher's initial shot. Rando was able to make the first save but couldn't grab the rebounded shot.
Even after pulling the goalie, the Raiders were unable to grab the tying goal. They are back on the ice tomorrow when travel to face No. 2 ranked Clarkson at 3 p.m. in Cheel Arena.
