HAMILTON – Colgate earned its first lead of the season, but the Raiders couldn't make it stand in a 4-1 loss to New Hampshire here Saturday.

Junior left winger Jocelyn Simpson found the net for Colgate at 8:05 of the first period – the Raiders first goal of the regular season and first lead. Simpson's backhander from in front beat Wildcats goalie Moe Bradley.

“It was good to get the team started and break the zero we had going for a while,” Simpson said. “It was nice to try and light the fire.”

Jenna Klynstra and Katie Case had the assists for Colgate.

New Hampshire (2-0), which won 4-3 Friday night at Syracuse, pulled even on Sara Carlson's goal with just less than five minutes left in the first period.

The Wildcats took the lead in the second stanza on a goal by Jonna Curtis, and then UNH made it 3-1 midway in the third with a 5-on-3 power play goal by Alexis Crossley. Kristina Lavoie capped the scoring with an empty-net tally in the final 90 seconds.

“I'm happy we came out and scored the first goal,” Colgate head coach Greg Fargo said. “That's big to be able to do that. But we want to be better in the 50 minutes that remain in the game.

“You go up 1-0 and it's great, but that's when we've really got to fight to get the second goal in the game and start to puts things away. For most teams, they get down 1-0 and there's some extra motivation to come back right away.”

Colgate (0-4) finished 0-for-6 on the power play, including four chances in the third period when the game was still in the balance. Colgate managed just five shots on goal in the final period.

“We struggled getting the puck up the ice on the power play,” Fargo said. “Having the time was good, but the time in zone seemed like it was few and far between when we were able to establish some plays and get shots to the net. We need to do a better job with that, for sure.”

Raiders goalie Susan Allen was solid again for the home side, making 32 saves after stopping 33 shots Friday night against Northeastern. The Raiders have played two games at No. 1-ranked Minnesota and now are in the middle of a four-game home stand against Hockey East opponents.

“The first four teams we've played have been tough,” Simpson said. “So we're trying to stay really positive and hope that playing against these teams really builds our confidence going into league games.

“The coaching staff is great and we have a lot of positive energy on this team.”

Shots for the game were 36-21 in favor of New Hampshire.

Colgate is home again next weekend, hosting Connecticut in a Friday-Saturday series. Start times are 7 p.m. Friday and 4 p.m. Saturday at Starr Rink.
