Brandon James scored a career-high 20 points, 15 in the first half, but it wasn't enough as the Colgate men's basketball team fell to Lehigh 78-56 Saturday at Cotterell Court.
James finished the game shooting 7-of-10 from the field, including 6-of-7 from downtown, to lead the Raiders, while seniors
Mike Venezia and
Nick Pascale scored 10 and eight points, respectively. Freshman
Luke Roh grabbed a career-high seven rebounds, while James had five boards, three assists and a steal in the loss.
Colgate (5-12, 0-3) opened the game with 11-4 run, including three trifectas from James and a layup by Pascale, to force Lehigh to call a timeout with 17:04 remaining. The Raiders then extended their lead to 16-7 after another three-pointer from James with 14:16 left. The Mountain Hawks then responded with a 6-2 run to trim the lead to 18-13 with 11 minutes remaining, before Colgate answered back with a 6-2 run over the next five minutes build its lead to 24-15. The Mountain Hawks then went on an 11-0 run, including nine points from C.J. McCollum, to take a 26-24 lead with 3:55 left. James then hit his fifth three-pointer of the half to give the led back to Colgate 27-26. But the Mountain Hawks answered back with another 11-0 run to close the half and take a 37-27 lead into the locker room.
Lehigh (14-5, 2-1) made back-to-back layups from McCollum and Holden Greiner to build a 41-29 lead in the first couple minutes of the second half, before the Raiders answered back with buckets from Venezia and Pascale to trim the lead to 41-33 with 17:23 left. The Mountain Hawks then went on a 10-5 run, including six points from McCollum, to build a 54-38 lead with 14:14 remaining in regulation. Lehigh's lead would stay around 16 points until the Raiders pieced together an 8-0 run, including another trifecta from James, to make the score 61-53 with 6:50 left. But that is close as the Raiders would get as Lehigh closed the game with a 17-3 run to grab its 14th win of the season.
McCollum finished with a game-high 32 points, while John Adams and Mackey McKnight scored 12 points apiece. Adams also recorded a game-high eight rebounds and two blocked shots.
Lehigh shot 46.2 percent from the floor, including 54.2 percent from three-point range, while Colgate shot 40.8 percent overall and 45.5 percent from downtown. The Mountain Hawks also won the battle on the boards 37-30 and forced 18 Colgate turnovers that resulted in 26 points.
The Raiders will travel to Army on Wednesday, Jan. 18. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at Christl Arena and will be streamed live on Patriot League All-Access.
