HAMILTON, N.Y. (2/11/11) – Junior goaltender
Kimberly Sass recorded 26 saves to help the Colgate women's hockey team secure a 1-0 shutout of Yale on Friday night.
This was Sass' fifth shutout of the season and third straight at home, both of which are new school records. All five of her shutouts have been recorded at Starr Rink. Sophomore
Brittany Phillips scored the game-winning goal for the Raiders.
The game got off to a frantic start as each team attempted to assert itself on the ice. As the period progressed it was Colgate (10-17-3, 7-10-2 ECAC) that found its composure first, generating its offense and outshooting the Bulldogs 7-2 in the first ten minutes of play. The Raiders continued to hold majority of the possession as they created one scoring opportunity after another but could not find the back of net. However, as the clock wound down, Yale soon found its rhythm and fired a series of shots at Colgate's net, but could not get past Sass and the Raiders' defense, which blocked a number of shots to keep the game scoreless.
The second frame got off to a quick start with both teams hungry for the first goal of the game. The Raiders attacked first, firing eight shots in comparison to Yale's two. The Bulldogs soon returned the favor with a series of opportunities, but like the first period neither team could get on the scoreboard. The quick pace continued through the frame as the teams skated up and down the ice in search of a goal. Finally in the closing minutes of the period, Colgate had a series of close attempts and found success at the 16:21 mark. Sophomore
Jenna Klynstra knocked the puck back from a faceoff to Phillips, who fired it top shelf to give the Raiders the 1-0 lead.
The tempo carried into the final period with Colgate searching for a second goal and the Bulldogs looking for an equalizer. However, despite an aggressive 20 minutes of hockey and a flurry of attempts from Yale in the final minutes of the game, the Raiders proved to be the stronger team, securing their fifth shutout win of the season.
Colgate will resume play tomorrow when it hosts Brown at 4 p.m. in Starr Rink. This will be the team's senior day in which they will honor the four seniors, and will also be a part of the National Girls and Women in Sports Day celebration.
