Box Score BRONX, N.Y. (11/29/11) - The Colgate men's basketball team dropped a tough 79-69 decision to Fordham Tuesday night at Rose Hill Gym. The Raiders, who led most of the game, watched the Rams finish regulation with a 26-13 run over the final seven minutes of action to steal the win.
Colgate (2-4) held a 56-53 lead with 7:44 remaining, before the Rams took the lead 57-56 with 7:29 left and never looked back. Fordham scored 21 of its 47 points in the second half from the charity stripe as Colgate committed 21 fouls in the half.
Senior
Nick Pascale recorded the fourth double-double of his career with 12 points and 10 rebounds as six Raiders scored in double-digits.
Pat Moore and
Sterling Melville led the way with 13 points apiece, while
Mitch Rolls scored 11.
Mike Venezia and
Brandon James both scored 10 as James also grabbed six boards in the loss.
Colgate came out hot connecting on five of its first seven shots, including a pair of three pointers from Rolls and Venezia to build a 12-4 lead with 14:20 remaining. The Rams scored the next six points to make the score 12-10, but Colgate responded with a 7-2 run off two three's from James and Rolls to build a 19-12 lead with 10:13 left in the half. Both teams would exchange baskets for the next five minutes as the Raiders led 29-22. But the Rams closed the half with a 10-4 run as Colgate took a 33-32 lead into the locker room.
Fordham (2-2) scored the first basket of the second half to take its first lead of the game 34-33, but the lead didn't last long as the Raiders responded with a 12-5 run to take the lead 45-39 with 15:35 remaining in regulation. Colgate would maintain its lead for the next eight minutes before Fordham took the lead for good. The Rams scored 14 of their final 22 points from the charity stripe as Colgate was in the double bonus for the final 10 minutes of regulation.
Fordham was led by Chris Gaston who recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Devon McMillan scored 20 points and Bryan Smith pitched in 19. The Rams shot 46.3 percent from the field, while holding Colgate to 39.6 percent. The Raiders won the battle on the boards 37-33, but were out shot from the charity stripe 40-24 and committed 20 turnovers that Fordham turned into 32 points.
The Raiders will host Eastern Michigan on Thursday, Dec. 1. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at Cotterell Court and will be streamed live online by GateTV on Colgate All-Access.
