Men's Basketball Drops 81-73 Decision at Marist

Sterling Melville scored a career-high 20 points in the loss.
Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (11/26/11) - The Colgate men's basketball team dropped a tough 81-73 decision to Marist Saturday night at McCann Arena. The Raiders, who trailed most of the game, trimmed the Red Foxes lead to 75-71 with 29 seconds remaining, before Marist made all of its free throws down the stretch.

Colgate (2-3) was led by senior forward Sterling Melville who scored a career-high 20 points, while junior Mitch Rolls pitched in a season-high 19 and sophomore Pat Moore added 13. Brandon James led the Raiders with nine rebounds, while John Brandenburg grabbed four. James also scored five points in the loss.

Marist (2-4) scored the first four points of the game before Melville made a three-pointer to put the Raiders on the board. Both teams would swap baskets in the opening minutes as Marist held a slim 11-10 lead with 14:48 remaining. But the Red Foxes would make the first run of the game (15-4) to build a 26-14 lead with 8:16 remaining. The Raiders would fight back late in the opening frame with a 7-0 run to make the score 36-30 with 90 ticks left, before Marist scored the final three points to take a 39-30 lead into the locker room.

The Raiders opened the second half with a 13-3 run capped off by back-to-back three-pointers from Moore to tie game 43-43 with 15:22 remaining in regulation. But Marist answered back with a 6-0 run to take a 49-43 lead. Colgate responded with a 5-2 run to make the score 51-48 with 10:58 remaining, before the Red Foxes put together a 22-12 run to extend their lead to 73-60 with 1:16 left. Melville and Rolls then hit back-to-back three-pointers to make the score 73-66 with 52 seconds left. A dunk by Manny Thomas would give Marist a 75-66 lead, but a three point play by Melville followed by a layup from Rolls, following a missed free throw attempt, made the score 75-71 with 29 seconds remaining. Colgate was then forced to foul and Marist made all six of its free throw attempts to seal the win.

Marist was led by Chavaughn Lewis who scored a game-high 23 points, while Thomas and Devin Price scored 13 and 12, respectively. Adam Kemp also scored eight points, while grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds for the Red Foxes.

Colgate shot 43 percent (28-64) from the field and an outstanding 54 percent (13-24) from beyond the arc, but was outrebounded 42-31 and outshot from the charity stripe 29-8.

The Raiders will stay instate when they travel to Fordham on Tuesday, Nov. 29. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at Rose Hill Gym.
