HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/12/11) - The Colgate women's hockey team dropped a 2-0 decision to Dartmouth on Saturday afternoon in Starr Rink.
This was the Raiders' second ECAC Hockey set back of the weekend. Senior
Kimberly Sass had 21 saves, with 10 in the final period.
Dartmouth took an early lead in the opening period, scoring a goal off a deflected shot at the 1:01 mark to put the score at 1-0. Colgate (4-7-1, 1-3-1 ECAC Hockey) soon found its offensive rhythm with a series of shots on net, one of which appeared to have entered the frame but after review was waved off by the officials. The Big Green then found a second goal midway through the period to increase their lead to 2-0. Feeling the pressure of the two-goal deficit, the Raiders sent a flurry of shots towards Dartmouth's goal, coming close on a few occasions but could not find the back of the net. Colgate outshot the Big Green 10-7 in the first 20 minutes of play.
The Raiders began the second frame with a power play advantage after a Dartmouth penalty late in the opening period. Colgate continued to carry its offensive momentum throughout the first 10 minutes of the stanza, finding some close attempts but could not capitalize. The first came when sophomore
Jocelyn Simpson used her stick work to get past two defenders but her final touch went just wide of the net. The second happened minutes later when senior co-captain
Amanda Kirwan connected with a pass that came sliding towards her as she rushed the left post but her shot went a couple of inches wide. The Raiders kept the pressure on into the final 10 minutes of the period causing the game to become more physical as Dartmouth struggled to clear the puck. Colgate continued to attack aggressively in the closing minutes, diving after pucks that were sliding across the crease, while making some strong blocks on its defensive end, but after an exciting and fast-paced second frame, the score remained 2-0.
Colgate continued to create some offense in the final period, almost beating the Big Green's goalie on a couple of scoring opportunities. Dartmouth returned the favor with a pair of shots that hit the pipe, but despite both teams' attempts on net, neither one could find a goal, putting the final score at 2-0 in favor of the Big Green.
The Raiders will resume ECAC Hockey play next weekend when they travel to Quinnipiac and Princeton for a pair of matchups on Friday, Nov. 18 and Saturday Nov. 19 respectively.
