HYANNIS, Mass. (10/22/11) – Austin Smith scored two goals in the third period to help the Colgate men's hockey team earn a 2-2 tie with Army in the second annual Cape Cod Classic at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center on Saturday evening.

Colgate (3-1-1) saw Smith score multiple goals for the ninth time in his career and he tallied two points for the 28th time. Joe Wilson, Thomas Larkin and Nathan Sinz were all given assists in the game. For Sinz, it was his first point of the season. Alex Evin got the start in net and made 22 saves, including 11 in the second period.

Army (0-3-1) remains winless, but didn't play like it tonight. Mike Henderson led the way with two points on a goal and an assist, while Kyle Maggard put home the first goal of the night for the Black Knights. Marcel Alvarez had a game-high two assists in the tie and Alex McRae also added an assist. Ryan Leets had 31 stops between the pipes with 12 in the first period.

After a scoreless opening period, Army took a 1-0 lead with a goal from Maggard with 8:04 remaining in the second period. Maggard got a pass from Henderson and drove to the net and slipped a shot past the pads of Evin for the lead. The Black Knights then went up 2-0 with 3:49 left in the second frame with Henderson tallying the goal for his second point of the night. He surprised Evin with the shot and found a hole between the pads. McRae and Alvarez were given assists on the play. For Alvarez, it was his second helper of the game.

Colgate came out on the mission in the third period and Smith scored his fourth of the season just 56 seconds into the period. He was able to beat Leets after receiving a pass from Wilson on a breakout. Then just over three minutes later the senior winger struck again with his second tally of the night on a 4-on-4 situation. Colgate won the draw back to Sinz, who shoveled a pass along the blueline to Larkin. The Italy native then found Smith at the opposite post for the tip in. There was nothing Leets could do on the play as Colgate knotted the score at 2-2.

The teams played into overtime and each team earned two shots on the net, but it was the Raiders with two golden chances that slipped away. Wagner was able to overtake the Army defender on the way to the net and toe-dragged a wrister wide of the net. Wilson also got in on Leets on a 2-on-1, but the netminder made the save.

Neither team was successful on the power play tonight. Colgate was 0-for-6 with the extra man, but two of the opportunities were less than 20 seconds. Army failed to score on three opportunities. The Raiders outshot the Black Knights 33-24 in the game.

Prior to the game, Mark Galloway '48 dropped the ceremonial first puck. Galloway was a goaltender for the Raiders in their undefeated season in 1946-47. He now lives in Chatham, Mass., and is 90 years old.

Colgate returns to action next weekend for a home-and-home series with Niagara, beginning on Friday night at Dwyer Arena in Niagara Falls.
