HAMILTON, N.Y. (2/6/10) - The Colgate women's hockey team split weekend play falling to Quinnipiac, 2-1, Saturday afternoon, a day after defeating Princeton. The Bobcats improve their ECAC record to 8-4-6 with a 15-8-7 overall mark. The Raiders record drops to 5-9-4 in the league and 9-17-4 overall this season.
The Bobcats were able to capitalize on an early power-play opportunity to gain the advantage against the Raiders. Quinnipiac freshman Heather Hughes took a chance shot from low on the left boards sneaking it in between Colgate goaltender
Kimberly Sass' (East Amherst, N.Y.) right pad and the goalpost. This gave the Bobcats the 1-0 lead just 3:17 into the first period. All three goals of the game came within the first six minutes of play in each period.
The Bobcats extended their lead to 2-0 at the 5:24 mark of the second period as Evelina Husar picked up a deflected shot from teammate Brittany Lyons and tucked the puck into the left corner of the goal. Quinnipiac, which outshot the Raiders 34-29, got off 17 of its shots in the second period.
Colgate looked its best in the third period, taking 14 shots on goal and cutting the Bobcats' lead to one. Quinnipiac's Jordan Elkins was called on a hooking penalty in the first 17 seconds of the third period, putting the Raiders on the power-play. Senior
Katie Stewart (Exeter, Ont.), who picked up her 50th career goal yesterday, took a shot from the point but it was blocked from reaching the net. Freshman
Jenna Klynstra (Edmonton, Alta.) grabbed the puck in the right faceoff circle and flipped it in behind Quinnipiac's Victoria Vigilanti.
The Raiders continued to pressure the Bobcats throughout the third period, pulling goaltender
Lisa Plenderleith (Ajax, Ont.) to give Colgate the extra-man advantage. Quinnipiac however, was able to withstand the Raiders' pressure to earn their eighth ECAC victory.
Sass finished with 27 saves in 40 minutes of play for Colgate while Plenderleith made five stops in the third period. Vigilanti had 28 saves for Quinnipiac.
