OPENING FACE-OFF
After finishing January with a 3-4-1 overall record, Colgate kicks off the month of February on the road as it travels to face Princeton and Quinnipiac, Friday and Saturday evening. The Raiders, who enter the weekend with a 10-10-5 overall record and 7-5-1 in ECAC Hockey action, are in a tie for fifth place in league standings with 15 points, five behind first place Cornell and three in back of Yale, Union and St. Lawrence. The seven league wins already passes last year's total of six for the entire schedule. Four points separate Colgate and Rensselaer, which are tied for fifth and 10th-place Princeton, which has 11 points. The Raiders gained a split on this particular road trip last season. Colgate opened with a 1-0 victory at Quinnipiac before falling 2-1 in overtime to Princeton the following evening at Hobey Baker Rink. In this particular road trip, Colgate has split the weekend four consecutive years.
MEET THE HEAD COACH
Don Vaughan is in his 17th year at the helm of the Colgate Raiders. The 1984 graduate of St. Lawrence enters the campaign as the program's all-time winningest coach with a 279-263-64 mark. On February 16, 2008, he became the all-time winningest coach with his 252nd victory as Colgate blanked Union 8-0. On November 11, 2007, former Colgate President, Rebecca S. Chopp, announced the creation of the Donald F. Vaughan Endowed Coaching Chair for Men's Hockey.

COLGATE/QUINNIPIAC SERIES HISTORY

Colgate is 3-2 all-time in games played in Hamden. Ten of the 16 meetings have been determined by one or fewer goals. Before the Bobcats won 5-3 in Hamilton, the previous eight games were determined by one or fewer goals.

Trailing 4-1, the Raiders made things interesting in the third period with back-to-back goals by Brian Day and Austin Smith at 5:53 and 8:33 to pull within one. With all the momentum, Colgate was whistled for a too many men on the ice penalty with 2:16 remaining giving Qpac a power play. Yuri Bouharevich scored with 54 seconds left to cement the victory. Day scored twice, while David McIntyre and Wade Poplawski each tallied two helpers. Charles Long saved 22 in the loss. The Bobcats' power play was the difference as it scored three of four times.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Three of Austin Smith's goals and four of his six points versus Qpac came in the second game of a three-game series in the opening round of the 2009 ECAC Hockey Tournament. On March 7, Smith posted a career-high goal and point total as Colgate rallied later to post a 5-4 overtime victory over the Bobcats at the TD Bank Center. Trailing 4-3, Smith scored his second extra attacker goal of his career with 19 seconds remaining in regulation time to force an extra five-minute session. The sophomore then knocked in the game winning goal 54 seconds into overtime to send the series into a third and deciding game.
LAST WEEKEND IN BRIEF
Friday evening, Colgate jumped out to a commanding 5-0 lead en route to posting a 6-1 victory over Clarkson to complete the regular-season sweep against the Golden Knights for the first time since the 1999-2000 campaign. Brian Day scored twice, while Robbie Bourdon (1-1-2) and David McIntyre (0-2-2) each posted multi-point evenings. Bourdon's sixth goal of the year at 12:11 of the opening period was the eventual game winning goal, his third of the season. Sean Carty netted his first goal of the year in the second period. It was the senior's first goal since March 22, 2008 in a 4-2 loss to Cornell in the ECAC Hockey Tournament consolation game in Albany. Alex Evin saved 20 shots in the victory. The six-goal outburst was Colgate's highest goal total at Starr Rink versus Clarkson since a 6-4 victory, January 5, 1996.
Saturday evening, Colgate held two leads against St. Lawrence, however the Saints got the equalizer eight minutes into the third period and won the game with 42 seconds left in overtime in a 3-2 win. The Raiders dominated play in the first two periods, holding St. Lawrence to only 10 shots. The Saints outshot Colgate 14-8 in the third period and 7-2 in overtime. It was the second consecutive game the Raiders had taken a shutout bid into the third period. Matt Firman opened scoring at 10:31 of the second to give Colgate the lead at 1-0. After the Saints scored early in the third, Brian Day deflected in his 16th of the year 39 seconds later to give the Raiders a 2-1 advantage. Alex Evin saved 28 shots in the loss. Colgate went scoreless in six power play opportunities.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE
Colgate enters February with a 10-10-5 overall record and is 7-5-1 in league play. At the same point last year, the Raiders were 7-14-5 overall and sported a 2-9-3 ECAC Hockey record. During the 2008-09 season including play-offs, Colgate's offense manufactured 89 goals. Heading into this weekend, the Raiders have accounted for 82.
AUSTIN “EXTRA ATTACKER” SMITH
On January 23, Austin Smith's extra attacker goal with 49 seconds left versus Robert Morris was his third such goal of his career. As a freshman, Smith scored two extra attacker goals in the closing minute to force overtime. On February 20, he scored at 19:21 of the third against Union to knot the game up at 2-2. Two weeks later, Smith scored with 19 seconds left as Colgate rallied from two down in the closing moments to force overtime in a potential elimination game at Quinnipiac. Smith would go on to score the game-winner less than a minute into overtime to force a third game in the opening round of the 2009 ECAC Hockey Tournament. Colgate has scored two extra attacker goals this season. Before Smith, Corbin McPherson was the last to post such a goal for the Raiders this season at 2:28 of the third in a 5-3 victory at Brown on November 13, 2009.
WHO'S HOT
In their last five games, David McIntyre (2-5-7) and Brian Day (4-3-7) have led the offensive charge for the Raiders. Day posted a team best three goals and an assist last weekend versus Clarkson and St. Lawrence. Austin Smith has produced two goals and four assists in his last five outings, while freshman Robbie Bourdon (2-3-5) has picked up his offensive game in his last four performances. Defenseman Thomas Larkin (2-2-4) had a four-game point streak snapped against St. Lawrence.
POINT PER GAME SMITTY
Heading into this weekend, Austin Smith is averaging a point per game in his career. The sophomore has played in 62 games and has 27 goals and 35 assists thus far in his career. Smith has 14 multi-point games in his career, including two four-point performances to his credit – one versus Quinnipiac last year and a four-assist evening at Canisius on December 20, 2009.
EVIN STEVEN
Alex Evin is 3-1-1 in his last five starts between the pipes for Colgate. During this stretch, he has posted 134 saves in 144 shots thrown his way for a .9305 save percentage. His goals against average has dipped from 3.48 to 2.84 with his last five performances.
LENDING A HELPING HAND
Colgate is one of three schools to have two players ranked among the top 18 nationally in assists per game. Heading into the series with Princeton and Qpac, Austin Smith is tied for 13th overall, averaging 0.84 helpers per outing, while David McIntyre is tied for 18th, averaging 0.79 assists per game. The other schools to have two represented include Wisconsin and Canisius. Smith ranks second in the ECAC Hockey with 21 assists, while McIntyre is right behind the sophomore in third with 20.
PASSING THE CENTURY MARK
With his career-high four-point evening versus Harvard, David McIntyre became the 48th player in the program's history to surpass the 100-point milestone. He heads this weekend's play versus Princeton and Quinnipiac with 119 career points, which stands 29th all-time. He needs three points to pass Larry Gibson for 28th; four points to pass former Raiders' assistant coach Andrew Dickson for 27th, and five points to surpass Steve Riggs and Dave MacKenzie for 25th.
GEE WILLIE
With his two appearances versus Clarkson and St. Lawrence last weekend, Jason Williams has appeared in 142 career games, which is tied for eighth with Tom Riley and Jesse Winchester on Colgate's all-time games played charts. With two more outings, he would move by Rob Brown for seventh. David McIntyre (140) and Ethan Cox (139) will move in the top 10 with two more outings. Tyler Burton holds the all-time record with 158 games.
CLIMBING UP THE LISTS
Rookie defensemen Thomas Larkin and Jeremy Price have three goals on the season. That is tied for eighth with J.R. Bria on the single-season list goals by a freshman blueliner. One more would move them into a tie for fifth all-time with David Sloane, Mike Campaner and Mike Dosdall. Larkin needs two more assists and points to move into the top 10 for rookie blueliners in those categories as well.
FRESHMEN IMPACT
After 25 games, the Colgate freshmen have integrated themselves rather well as far as posting points. Including a combined five-point weekend versus Clarkson and St. Lawrence, the freshman class has posted 51 points, or 2.04 points per game (17 goals, 34 assists). Earlier, there was a four-game stretch where a freshman collected his first collegiate goal of his career. Kurtis Bartliff netted his first goal in the 1-1 tie with nationally ranked Nebraska-Omaha, while Christian Long found the back of the next the following night against the Mavericks. Against UMass-Lowell, it was Robbie Bourdon's turn to light the lamp and then it was Jeremy Price opening the scoring versus Army. Bourdon (6-9-15) and defenseman Thomas Larkin (3-11-14) lead the scoring charge for the first year players.
DIGGING OUT OF A HOLE
When Colgate rallied from a two-goal deficit in the third period to battle to a 3-3 tie with Robert Morris, Saturday evening, it wasn't the first time the Raiders have battled back from a more than one goal deficit in the final period. In the second opener, Colgate posted a 4-4 tie at Niagara after trailing by as many as three late in the second period. On November 6, Colgate posted a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over Harvard after trailing the Crimson 4-1 at the start of the third period.

THE PRICE IS RIGHT
Freshman Jeremy Price was one of four rookies nationally to gain honorable mention rookie of the month honors by the Hockey Commissioner's Association for the month of December. The defenseman tallied two goals in three games, both coming in an overtime loss to Canisius. He became the first defenseman to net two goals in the same game since Jason Fredricks on January 8, 2009 in a 5-4 overtime victory over Lake Superior State
47th IS GOOD IN THIS INSTANCE
Colgate is ranked 47th in the nation averaging 12.1 penalty minutes per game. Alaska remains the least penalized school in the country at 9.8, while its rival to the south, Alaska Anchorage posts on average 21.3, which is the most in the nation.
PENALTY KILL SHOWING IMPROVEMENT
After allowing five goals in 11 penalty kills in two games to Notre Dame and Niagara to kick off the New Year at the Shillelagh Tournament in Chicago, Colgate has settled down to kill off 24 of its last 29 (.8275) penalties in its last six games.
MORE ON PENALTY KILLING
During the season, Colgate has been down two men to penalties 12 times this season, including giving Canisius two five on three man advantages on December 20. The Raiders have allowed only three goals when being down two men – versus Niagara in a 5-1 loss in the consolation game of the Shillelagh Tournament; versus Army in a 4-4- overtime draw and in a 6-2 victory at Clarkson.
HITTING 1,000
With his 16-save performance versus Notre Dame, Charles Long became the 17th goalie in Colgate history to reach 1,000 career saves. The senior posted 22 saves versus St. Lawrence to up his total to 1,058 for his career.
HIGHEST TWO-GAME OUTPUT
Colgate scored 11 goals in its last two games before the Christmas break versus Rensselaer and Canisius. It was the highest two-goal output since the Raiders outscored Rensselaer and Union 12-0 at home February 15-16, 2008. It's the highest two-game scoring output away from Starr Rink since the 2003-04 season, December 12 and 28th when Colgate posted 11 goals at Sacred Heart and against Northeastern in the first round of the Rensselaer Holiday Tournament in Troy, N.Y.
EVIN SAYS NO SOUP FOR MV-T
In Colgate's 3-1 loss at Union, Alex Evin stopped Mario Valery-Trabucco on a penalty shot in the second period. It was the first penalty shot against Colgate since March 19, 2004 when former Raider standout Steve Silverthorn stopped Clarkson's Chris Blight in an ECAC Hockey semifinal match-up. The opposition has only scored three times in nine tries against Colgate goalies – the last coming on January 4, 2003 as Randy Jones beat Silverthorn in a 6-0 Raider loss.
RPI OUTBURST
Colgate's five-goal outburst was the most goals scored by the Raiders against the Engineers since a 5-4 victory at Starr Rink back on February 18, 2000. The performance also served as the most goals scored by Colgate at Rensselaer in close to 15 years. The Raiders posted a 6-3 win at Houston Fieldhouse on January 16, 1995.
40 SOMETHING ON SATURDAYS
In back-to-back Saturday performances against Yale (11/14) and Princeton (11/21), Colgate goalies posted 40 or more saves. On November 14, Charles Long saved a career-high 41 shots in a 3-3 tie with the then 11th-ranked Bulldogs. The following Saturday, Alex Evin bested his former career-high of 41 set last season with a 43-save performance in a 5-4 overtime victory against the Tigers at Starr Rink, In the opening Saturday of league play, Long tallied 38 saves in a victory over Dartmouth (11/7).
DOUBLE BIG MAC
For the second time in three weeks, Colgate's David McIntyre was named as the ECAC Hockey Player of the Week on November 23. The senior posted two goals and three assists on the weekend versus Quinnipiac and Princeton. On November 9, he was honored with the recognition for the first time this season after tallying a five-point weekend in a sweep of Harvard and Dartmouth. In the opening game that weekend, McIntyre posted a career-high four-point outing (a goal and three assists) as Colgate overcame a 4-1 third-period deficit to down the Crimson 5-4. He scored a goal the following evening in a 3-2 win over Dartmouth. That same day, teammate Thomas Larkin was named the league's rookie of the week. He posted two points on the weekend, both coming versus Harvard (one goal, one assist). It was his first multi-point game of his career.
FIRST WEEKEND SWEEP IN A WHILE
When Colgate downed Harvard and Dartmouth to open its 2009-2010 ECAC Hockey slate, it was the first four-point weekend since February 15-16, 2008 when the Raiders blanked Rensselaer 4-0 and Union 8-0. Colgate's last non-conference weekend sweep was over Robert Morris on December 1-2, 2007.
HOLIDAY DRIVE A SUCCESS
Ethan Cox's canned food and toy drive from November 21st's clash with Princeton was a major success. The senior spearheaded a dual drive for the first time and raised over 1,000 pounds of food, 150 toys, and $650, which will go along way in providing holiday cheer to families in the greater Hamilton Area. The food items will help restock the supply at the Hamilton Food Cupboard, while the toys will be given to the Holiday Interfaith Council. Last year's drives raised 350 pounds of food, 200 toys and $1,007 in cash over two separate weekends.
A RECAP OF THE OVERTIME STREAK
Colgate entered the 2009-2010 campaign having played seven consecutive overtime games, which dated back to the end of 2008-09 season. The Raiders went 3-2-2 down the stretch in these games – the two losses coming to Quinnipiac in a best of three series in a first round ECAC Hockey Tournament clash in Hamden, Conn. The streak began at home with a 2-2 tie versus Union on February 20. Colgate would go on to beat Rensselaer (2-1); tie Brown 3-3 in Providence and then upset #11 Yale (3-2) in front of a national TV audience in New Haven all before the meetings with the Bobcats. Quinnipiac won the opener 3-2; then Colgate rallied from a two-goal deficit late in the game for a 5-4 victory to force a third game. The Bobcats prevailed 4-3 in the final game of the series. The Raiders stretched the streak to eight with a 4-4 tie at Niagara last Friday evening, but was broken the following night in a 3-2 regulation victory at RIT. It was Colgate's first regulation victory since a 1-0 defeat of Dartmouth on Valentines Day at Thompson Arena.
SHOULD OVERTIME HAPPEN
If it happens, eyes need to focus on two of Colgate's best ever goal scorers in overtime in David McIntyre and Austin Smith. McIntyre is tied for second all-time with three overtime game winners. He needs one more to tie Jon Smyth for first. One of McIntyre's goals lifted Colgate by Clarkson in the third and final game of an ECAC Hockey quarterfinal as the Raiders advanced to the Final Four as the seventh seed. Smith is tied for sixth having scored two overtime winners as a freshman last season versus Lake Superior State and Quinnipiac. McIntyre has six overtime points (3 goals, 3 assist) and five of them came last season. The only game he didn't record a point in a game winner in overtime was Colgate's 5-4 victory over Quinnipiac in the second game of the three-game series.
GETTING DRAFTY
Colgate has six NHL draft picks on its 2009-2010 roster. David McIntyre was drafted in the fifth round of the 2006 Draft by the Dallas Stars. Last year, his rights were traded twice in two months and now stands property of the New Jersey Devils. Corbin McPherson (New Jersey, 3rd, 2007), Brian Day (New York Islanders, 6th, 2006), Austin Smith (Dallas Stars, 5th, 2007), Jeremy Price (Vancouver Canucks, 4th, 2009), and Thomas Larkin (Columbus Blue Jackets, 5th, 2009) round out the Raiders' draft picks.
BLUELINE SHUFFLE
Colgate will have a revamped defense for the 2009-2010 season. Don Vaughan's squad lost five defensemen to graduation that combined to play close to 600 collegiate games. With the return of Corbin McPherson, Wade Poplawski and Kevin McNamara, the Raiders have 132 games of collegiate experience. Newcomers will need to make an impact on the blueline this season.
OH BROTHER
Charles and Christian Long are the first set of brothers to play for Don Vaughan at the same time. They hail from Cleveland Heights, Ohio and played junior hockey for the Brockville Braves of the CJHL. Charles and Christian have played three years together at different levels including helping St. Edwards High School to an Ohio State High School title.
