HAMILTON, N.Y. (2/16/10) – Cornell forward Riley Nash had two goals and two assists as the 10th-ranked Big Red defeated Colgate 6-2, Tuesday night at Starr Rink.
For Colgate, junior forward Francois Brisebois (Montreal, Que.) had two assists, feeding both senior forward David McIntyre (Pefferlaw, Ont.) and junior forward Brian Day (Danvers, Mass.) on one-timers.
The Big Red opened the scoring after forward Colin Greening put in a tough angle shot, collecting a rebound off a Nick D'Agostino miss at 11:36 of the first. Nash had a secondary assist on the goal. The Raiders had a couple good chances in the first period, but could not get a goal by Cornell goaltender Ben Scrivens.
With Cornell leading 1-0 early in the second period, Nash collected the puck in the neutral zone after a blocked shot, skated down the right side and scored a goal after shooting from the inner part of the face-off circle at 5:07. Less than two minutes later, Brisebois stole the puck in the neutral zone, skated to the goal line and fired a pass to McIntyre, who one-timed it past Scrivens for his 10th of the year, to bring Colgate within a goal. Freshman forward Robbie Bourdon (Ile Bizard, Que.) earned a secondary assist on the play.
The Raiders had multiple chances to score in the second period, firing 18 shots to Cornell's six. However, Scrivens came through with numerous timely saves, including a glove stop on a Bourdon slap shot through traffic. With 11 seconds left in the period, Nash scored his second goal of the evening after collecting a rebound and firing the shot at the near post.
Down 3-1, Colgate earned a power play to start the third period, but two quick penalties put the Raiders in a four-on-three shorthanded situation. At 2:01 of the third period, Blake Gallagher scored from a slap shot in the far slot after receiving a pass from Riley Nash, who initially received a pass from Brendan Nash on the play. Senior goaltender Charles Long (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) replaced sophomore goalie Alex Evin (Castlegar, B.C.) after Gallagher's goal.
Less than two minutes later, Tyler Roeszler scored after rebounding his own miss. Leading up to the play, Locke Jillson left a drop-off pass for Patrick Kennedy, who found Roeszler in the slot.
At 17:13 of the third period, Colgate scored its second goal in the contest when Brisebois dug the puck out of the corner and fired a pass to a streaking Day, who fired a one-timer past Scrivens from the faceoff circle for his team-leading 18th of the year. Austin Smith (Dallas, Texas) also was credited with an assist as well. Cornell closed the scoring 17 seconds later after Sean Whitney stole a pass in the Colgate offensive zone and scored a goal on a breakaway.
The Raiders outshot the Big Red 35-26 on the night. While Colgate went 0-6 on the power play, it did hold Cornell to just one power play score on six attempts.
Scrivens had 33 saves on the night. Evin finished with 13, and Long had seven.
Colgate (12-13-5, 9-8-1) is currently sixth in the ECAC with 19 points and sits just one point out of fourth place with four games to go. Cornell is currently in a tie for first place with Yale.
The Raiders will now go to the road and face Dartmouth on Friday night before traveling to Cambridge for a Saturday night contest against Harvard. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m.
