Katie Stewart (Exeter, Ont.) picked up her first career hat trick, and then some, scoring all four goals in the Raiders, 4-3, win against ECAC opponent Brown on Saturday afternoon at Meehan Auditorium. The last time a Colgate player scored four goals in a game was back on Feb. 25, 2006, when Kara Leene scored four goals in a 9-0 win against Union.
The Raiders improve to 6-10-4 in the league and 10-18-4 overall while the Bears drop to 2-20-4 overall and 0-17-3 in the ECAC. The Bears were able to gain a 3-1 lead mid-way through the second period, but Stewart responded with two goals to close the second and a third goal in the final stanza to guarantee the Colgate win.
Brown scored back-to-back goals in the first period to earn an early 2-0 advantage. Rookie Alena Polenska started off the scoring at the 9:57 mark, with Senior Sasha Van Muyen picking up the second goal just 1:03 later. Classmate Nicole Brown had her initial shot saved before Van Muyen knocked in the goal, giving her the assist.
Stewart opened the second period scoring her first of three goals in the second stanza just 5:04 into the period. Classmate
Beth Rotenberg (Toronto, Ont.) had an assist on the goal. The Bears weren't willing to give up their two-point lead, responding with their third goal of the game just 5:20 later as junior Jenna Dancewicz picked up her fourth goal of the season.
Stewart picked up her second goal a short time later at 14:15 and recorded her hat trick just over three minutes later at 17:56 on a power-play opportunity. Both of Stewart's second period goals were unassisted.
The Raiders opened the third period set to take the lead with Stewart picking up her fourth goal of the game just 2:50 into the final set. Colgate goaltender
Lisa Plenderleith (Ajax, Ont.) made 12 saves in the third period to ensure the Raiders victory. The junior net-minder had 30 saves in the game, while Brown's Katie Jamieson made 33 stops in the Bears loss.
Colgate will wrap up its regular season schedule at home next weekend when the Raiders host Union and Renselaer. The squad will take on Union on Friday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. in Starr Rink followed by Renselaer on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 4 p.m.
