BOX SCORE
HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/20/10) – The Colgate men's hockey team scored two power play goals, but it wasn't enough as the fifth-ranked Yale Bulldogs handed the Raiders a 6-4 defeat at Starr Rink on Saturday night.
Colgate (2-7-1, 0-5-1 ECAC) got goals from senior captain
Brian Day (Danvers, Mass.), sophomore
Robbie Bourdon (Montreal, Que.) and rookie
Mike McCann (Barrington, Ill.) in the loss. The Raiders also got two assists from sophomore
Kurtis Bartliff (Clinton, Ont.). Rookie
Erik Mihalik (Avon Lake, Ohio) pushed aside 28 shots in his second career start.
Yale (7-1-0, 4-0-0 ECAC) did all of its scoring in bunches with three goals scored in a matter of 1:17 early in the first period and three coming in the last seven minutes in the second period. Kenny Agostino posted two of the six goals and added an assist for three points. Antoine Laganiere recorded a two-point day with a goal and an assist. Ryan Rondeau had to work in the third period with 14 saves and pushed aside 29 in his sixth win of the year.
Day got the scoring started less than a minute into the game on the power play. It was the first for the Raiders in their last 22 opportunities. Rookie
Anthony Hamburg (Phoenix, Ariz.) circled around the net and threw a backhand into the crowd in the crease and Day somehow got a stick on it and put it past Rondeau for a 1-0 lead. Junior
Austin Smith (Dallas, Texas) was credited an assist on the play.
Yale answered with three-consecutive goals in a 1:17 span to knock Colgate on its heels at 3-1. Andrew Miller scored on the power play with an unassisted goal, then Jeff Anderson put home a blocked shot from the slot to make it 2-1. Agostino netted the third goal 14 seconds later and just like that it was 3-1 Bulldogs at the end of one.
Bourdon got one back for Colgate 1:47 into the second frame. The sophomore threw a puck on net from the corner boards that deflected off of a Yale defender and through a surprised Rondeau to cut the lead to 3-2. Junior
Nick Prockow (Montreal, Que.) chose a good time to get his first of the season coming two minutes later on a nice deflection. Junior
Corbin McPherson (Folsom, Calif.) shot the puck from the left point and Prockow was camped out in front and tipped it into the top corner of the net.
The Bulldogs answered with another three-goal run to push the back up to three at 6-3. Agostino scored his second of the night, while Laganiere and Broc Little added the other two.
With 12:41 left in the game, Colgate tried to come back with a nice goal from McCann, which was his second collegiate score. Bartliff circled behind the net and found McCann in the slot and he put the puck in the net to make it 6-4.
Colgate couldn't get back on the power play and dropped its fifth-straight. The Raiders were outshot for the first time since the second game at Lake Superior State. The Bulldogs had a slim 34-33 advantage in the category. Colgate went 2-for-5 with the extra man and Yale earned two goals in four power play opportunities.
The Raiders have a quick turnaround as Colgate heads to Niagara on Tuesday night for a 7 p.m. start in Western New York.
