HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/12/10) – The Colgate men's hockey team erased a three-goal deficit in the final period, but Princeton was able to hold off the Raiders and handed them a 4-3 loss on Friday night at Starr Rink.
Colgate (2-4-1, 0-2-1 ECAC) saw junior
Thomas Larkin (Cocquio Trevisago, Italy) lead the way with a goal and an assist for two points, while sophomore
Kurtis Bartliff (Clinton, Ont.) and sophomore
Jeremy Price (Milton, Ont.) also netted goals. Junior
Alex Evin (Castlegar, B.C.) took the loss with 26 saves between the pipers.
Princeton (2-3-1, 2-1-0 ECAC) got two goals and an assist from Mike Kramer, including the gamewinner. Andrew Calof added a goal and three assists for four points, while Rob Kleebaum netted a goal to put Princeton up 3-0. Alan Reynolds made 32 stops in net to earn the win and made 16 alone in the third period.
Princeton wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as the Tigers won the opening faceoff and Kramer put a shot a net that Evin stopped. However the puck came to Calof and he lifted the puck over Evin's pads 16 seconds into the game to make it 1-0. Kramer got into the scoring column less than three minutes later to increase the lead to 2-0. Taylor Fedun charged the net and put two shots on net that Evin stopped, but Kramer was open at the far post and jammed home the second rebound.
With 5:21 left in the period, Kleebaum made it 3-0 in favor of Princeton. He intercepted a clearing pass from the Raiders and skated in on Evin. Kleebaum had his first shot stuffed, but followed the rebound and scored.
Colgate netted its first of the night with 3:44 left in the first frame. Rookie
Anthony Hamburg (Phoenix, Ariz.) took the puck on a Princeton giveaway and slipped it behind the net to junior
Nick Prockow (Montreal, Que.). He then found Larkin in the high slot and the sophomore beat Reynolds on a nice wrister under the cross bar.
The Raiders got to within one goal late in the second period. Junior
Corbin McPherson (Folsom, Calif.) skated down the left side and blasted a slap shot from the point that deflected off a Princeton skate and it came to Bartliff. The forward put the puck on the net and beat Reynolds to make it 3-2.
In the third period, Price knotted the game-tying goal 5:43 into the frame for his first of the season. The assists were awarded to Larkin and rookie
Mike McCann (Barrington, Ill.). McCann won the faceoff back to Larkin, who fired a shot that was blocked. The puck made its way across the ice to a waiting Price. He took a shot from above the circle and lit the lamp.
Kramer answered five minutes later with his second of the game with the assist to Taylor Fedun and Calof. Kramer split the seem down the ice and Calof caught him in stride. Kramer avoided pressure and beat Evin as the Colgate netminder fell to the ice. He gave the Tigers a one-goal lead at 4-3 and Princeton killed off a pair of penalties down the stretch to earn the win.
Colgate finished the night 0-for-6 on the power play, while the Tigers score once in three opportunities. The Raiders had a 35-30 shot advantage in the game, but couldn't overcome an early three-goal deficit.
