BOX SCORE

HYANNIS, Mass. (10/9/10) –
The Colgate men's hockey team opened the 2010-11 season with a 3-1 win at the Cape Cod Classic on Saturday night in front of 1,689 fans at the Hyannis Youth & Community Center.

Colgate (1-0) got a goal and an assist from senior captain Brian Day (Danvers, Mass.) as he scored the first goal of the season in the second period. Freshman Mike McCann (Barrington, Ill.) netted his first collegiate goal, which turned out to be the gamewinner. Junior Austin Smith (Dallas, Texas) added an empty net goal late in the third to close the scoring. Junior Alex Evin (Castlegar, B.C.) made 22 stops, including 10 in the opening period.

Army (0-1) saw its lone goal scored by Marcel Alvarez on the power play. The story for the Black Knights was goaltender Jay Clark, who made 42 saves on the night with 21 in the second period when the Raiders out shot Army by a 22-2 margin.

After a scoreless first period, Day lit the lamp exactly a minute into the period with the assists going to junior Francois Brisebois (Montreal, Que.) and rookie Chris Wagner (Walpole, Mass.), who was playing in front of a lot of his hometown friends and family. Brisebois was behind the net and found an open Day at the top of the crease to make it 1-0 Colgate.

Action picked up in the third period and McCann took advantage. Sophomore Billy Rivellini (Great Falls, Va.) found McCann streaking into the slot and put the puck on the blade of his stick. As he was crashing into the net, McCann found a way to score and increase the lead to 2-0. The referees, then called McCann for goalie interference on the play and the Black Knights made the Raiders pay for the call. Mike Santee fired a slap shot from the blueline that got tipped up high and the puck bounced off the glass. It then hit Evin and fell into the net. Alvarez was credited with the goal on the tip to cut the lead to 2-1.

The pressure was put on the Raiders down the stretch, but Evin made the saves and Smith sealed the deal with an empty net goal off of an assist from Day.

Army finished the night 1-for-5 on the power play, while Colgate failed on all six opportunities. The Raiders held a commanding 45-23 shot advantage after outshooting the Black Knights, 22-2 in the second frame.

The Raiders will be back in action at Starr Rink a week from Saturday as they host Brock University in an exhibition matchup.
