HAMDEN, CONN. (10/30/10) – The Colgate women's ice hockey team secured its third win of the season on Saturday, when it defeated Quinnipiac 2-1 in overtime. This was the Raiders' first ECAC Hockey win of the young season.
Colgate (3-5, 1-1) got on the board early at the 11:39 mark of the first period when sophomore
Jenna Klynstra (Edmonton, Alta.) snuck the puck past Victoria Vigilanti to give the Raiders the 1-0 lead going into the second frame. Senior
Amanda Kirwan (Mississauga, Ont.) was credited with the assist.
The Raiders held the lead through the second period and into the third until Kristen Eklund connected with Elena Orlando at the 7:11 mark to tie the game at 1-1. Colgate continued to attack the Bobcats' net, outshooting them 14-8, but was unable to get the goal it needed to end the game in regular time.
The team carried its momentum into overtime and was rewarded shortly after at the 1:36 mark when Klynstra found her second goal of the game with the help of seniors
Jessi Waters (Menlo Park, Calif.) and
Hannah Milan (Great Barrington, Mass.) to score the game-winner for the Raiders.
Senior
Lisa Plenderleith (Ajax, Ont.) made 20 saves for Colgate, while Vigilanti stopped 37 in the loss for Quinnipiac. Colgate finished 1-of-5 on the power play, while holding the Bobcats scoreless in five opportunities.
The Raiders will resume play next weekend when they return to the friendly confines of Starr Rink to face ECAC opponents Dartmouth and No. 9 Harvard on Friday, Nov. 5 and Saturday Nov. 6, respectively.
