HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/27/10) – Sophomore forward
Yaw Gyawu (Lilburn, Ga.) made a 15-foot jumper with 2.9 seconds left and junior guard
Joe Hoban (West Chester, Pa.) intercepted the ensuing inbounds pass as Colgate overcame a 12-point first half deficit to defeat Holy Cross 69-68 at Cotterell Court.
Senior forward
Ben Jonson (Dallas, Texas) hoisted up a three-pointer as time wound down, but the shot fell short and was deflected off a Holy Cross player into the hands Gyawu, who calmly sank the game-winning jumper.
The game was characterized by a series of runs. Holy Cross jumped out to a 16-4 lead, but Colgate roared back to within one point at halftime thanks to ten first half points from senior guard
Kyle Roemer (Martinez, Calif.). Sophomore point guard
Anthony Hill (Plano, Texas) ended the first half with a three-pointer, bringing Colgate to within 32-31 at halftime.
Holy Cross led 39-35 early in the second half before Colgate went on a 17-2 run that was capped off by six points from freshman point guard
Mitch Rolls (Coffeyville, Kan.), who finished the game by matching his career-high of ten points.
Leading 52-41 with 8:26 left, it appeared as though the Raider lead was safe, but Holy Cross guard Devin Brown caught fire. Brown--who scored all 19 of his points in the second half—poured in 14 over the last 7:17 of the game, including a three-pointer with 2:43 left to get Holy Cross within 64-63. After a Colgate turnover, Mike Cavataio made a layup to give the Crusaders a one-point lead. Jonson responded with a three-pointer, but Brown swished a shot from beyond the arc as well to re-take the lead for Holy Cross. The ensuing Colgate timeout led to Gyawu's game-winning bucket.
Roemer led the Raiders with 18 points, and Gyawu scored 17 to go along with a team-high six boards. Like Gyawu, Jonson also had a team-high six rebounds, as he pitched in 12 points. For Holy Cross, Cavataio had 12 points and nine assists. Andrew Keister had eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Colgate (6-14, 2-4) will now travel to Annapolis, Md., to take on Navy on Saturday (Jan. 30) at 7 p.m. The game can be seen on Patriot League All-Access.
