ITHACA, N.Y. (1/23/10) - The Colgate women's hockey team fell to host Cornell, 6-0, on Saturday afternoon in their second meeting this weekend. The Raiders are now 7-15-4 overall and 3-7-4 in the ECAC while the Big Red improve to 10-7-4 overall with a 9-1-4 mark in the league.
After earning a 3-3 draw in yesterday's meeting at Starr Rink, the Raiders were unable to repeat their success, going 0-3 on the power-play while the Big Red finished 3-7 on power-play opportunities.
Junior goaltender
Lisa Plenderleith (Ajax, Ont.) had 32 saves for the Raiders but it wasn't enough as Cornell was able to pick up two goals per period. On the other end of the ice the Big Red's Amanda Mazzotta made 17 stops to halt the Raiders offense and earn her sixth shut-out of the season.
Cornell's Laura Fortino started off the scoring earning two power-play goals in the first period to give the Big Red a 2-0 advantage. Lauriane Rougeau then opened the second period with the first even strength goal of the game with 12:30 left in the stanza. Cornell finished with one last power-play goal to head into the third period with a decisive 4-0 lead. The Big Red would score twice more in the third with Rougeau picking up her second goal of the night to end the game.
The Raiders will be back in action this weekend when they travel to the north-country to take on ECAC opponents Clarkson and St. Lawrence. Colgate will take on Clarkson on Friday, Jan. 29 at 7 p.m. followed by a 4 p.m. meeting with St. Lawrence on Saturday, Jan. 30.
