HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/22/10) - Senior
Katie Stewart (Exeter, Ont.) put in two goals for the Raiders and classmate
Ali Edell (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) added the game-tying goal as the Colgate women's ice hockey team skated to a 3-3 draw against visiting Cornell on Friday afternoon at Starr Rink. The Raiders are now 7-14-4 overall and 3-6-4 in the ECAC while the Big Red claim a 9-7-4 overall record and 8-1-4 mark in the league.
After a scoreless first period, the second was anything but with five goals scored as Cornell gained a 3-2 advantage. The Big Red wasted no time getting the scoring started in the period, with Amber Overguard scoring in the first two minutes of play to give Cornell a 1-0 lead.
The Raiders were quick to respond with Stewart's first goal of the game coming just over a minute later, 2:47 into the second period. Senior
Evan Minnick (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) took the initial shot but it hit the pipe and bounced back out where Stewart picked up the puck taking it behind the net for the wrap-around goal. Junior
Jacquie Colborne (Calgary, Alta.) was also credited with an assist.
A few minutes later Stewart picked up her second goal of the night to give the Raiders a 2-1 advantage and their only lead of the game. Sophomore
Amanda Kirwan (Mississauga, Ont.) sent a pass up the ice to Stewart who picked up the puck at the Raiders blue line. Stewart then got in front of two Big Red defenders on a breakaway and slipped the puck in behind Cornell's Amanda Mazzotta. Senior
Marissa Dombovy (Webster, N.Y.) also picked up her first of two assists on the play.
The Raiders wouldn't hold the lead for long though as the Big Red tallied back-to-back goals of their own to gain a 3-2 lead. This time it was Karlee Overguard who scored for Cornell after Laura Fortino decided to pass the puck across the crease instead of taking a shot from the right side. Overguard slipped it past Colgate's
Lisa Plenderleith (Ajax, Ont.) as she scrambled to get back and cover the left side of the goal. The Big Red picked up their third goal of the game less than minute later with 11:43 left on the clock with Catherine White scoring on the power-play.
Colgate opened the third period down 3-2, but wouldn't be deterred. The Raiders were able to tie the game in the ninth minute after Stewart's drop pass was picked up by Edell. The senior defender took a slap-shot from the blue line which sailed just over Mazzotta's glove tying the game at 3-3.
Despite both teams going on the power-play during the overtime session, neither was able to get past the stellar goaltending of Plenderleith and Mazzotta, ending the game in a draw. Colgate's Plenderleith finished the game with 33 saves including three in overtime, while Mazzotta had 15 stops, three in overtime, for the Big Red.
The Raiders will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 23 when they travel to Ithaca, N.Y. for the second game of the series, facing Cornell at 3 p.m.
