HAMILTON, N.Y. (9/12/09)
— Junior quarterback Greg Sullivan (Monroe, N.Y.) threw for 148 yards and two touchdowns as Colgate defeated Stony Brook 23-13 on Saturday night.

Sullivan also had 18 carries for 113 rushing yards, marking the third time in his career that he has rushed for at least 100 yards in a game.

Senior wide receiver Pat Simonds (Sidney, N.Y.) caught seven passes for 93 yards and two touchdowns on the night. On defense, senior safety Uzi Idah (Rolling Hills Estate, Calif.) accrued nine tackles and two sacks, while senior linebacker Garrington Spence (Anaheim, Calif.) had a 15-yard interception return for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

Both teams struggled to move the ball initially, but Colgate got on the scoreboard first when Sullivan fired a high-arcing 37-yard pass to Simonds for a touchdown. Simonds out-leaped his defenders for the jump ball and ran a few yards into the end zone for the score. Stony Brook responded with a touchdown later in the quarter after a quick three-play, 80-yard drive, tying the game at seven after Edwin Gowins ran for a 39-yard touchdown. Gowins led the Stony Brook offensive effort with 17 carries for 108 rushing yards and a touchdown on the night.

In the second quarter, Sullivan once again produced a big play, running for 28 yards on 4th-and-1 from the Stony Brook 37-yard line. Colgate was unable to score a touchdown, but Evan Colborne (Tampa, Fla.) kicked his first career field goal from 19 yards out to give the Raiders a 10-7 lead.

After a Stony Brook three-and-out, Sullivan found Simonds for a second long touchdown pass, this time for 35 yards. On that play, Sullivan threw a laser down the middle of the field to Simonds, who then evaded a tackle and ran the rest of the way for a score. Stony Brook chipped away at the lead, however, as kicker Wesley Skiffington knocked in two field goals, both from 36 yards out, to help the Seawolves cut Colgate's lead to 17-13.

The second half was a defensive duel. Neither team scored in the third quarter, as both teams came up with big plays. Stony Brook had a first-and-ten from its own 28-yard line when quarterback Michael Coulter threw the ball down the sideline to a wide-open Stephan Towns at the Colgate 40. As Towns was gaining possession of the ball, Idah sprinted over and delivered a huge hit, jarring the ball loose for an incompletion on a play that had the potential to be a 72-yard touchdown.

Both teams continued to struggle in the fourth quarter on offense. A coffin corner punt from Evan Goldszak (Naples, Fla.) pinned Stony Brook at the one-yard line. Stony Brook got a first down after a fake punt moved the chains by inches. Two plays later, Spence got a good read on a Coulter pass and intercepted the ball. Spence caught the ball in the middle of the field and immediately took off for the corner of the end zone with a bevy of Seawolves chasing him. However, Spence was able to get the football just past the goal line for the touchdown. Spence recorded both his first career touchdown and interception on the play. On the next drive, junior cornerback Coree' Moses (Newington, Conn.) intercepted a Coulter pass, and Colgate kneeled on the ball to end the game.

Colgate (2-0) will travel to Hanover, New Hampshire to face Dartmouth on Saturday, September 19 at 1:30 p.m. Colgate has won its last three meetings against the Big Green.

Game Notes: Sullivan now has over 1,000 rushing yards on his career ... Spence's interception return for a touchdown marked the first time a Colgate played has done that since November 19, 2005 when Jared Nepa picked off a pass for a 16-yard score against Georgetown ... Colgate has now started 2-0 for the first time since 2003, when the Raiders finished 15-1 and went to the Division I-FCS Championship Game ... The 13 points Colgate allowed were the fewest the Raiders have given up since November 1, 2008. On that day, Colgate defeated Lafayette 21-13 at Andy Kerr Stadium.
