Bogdanich Wins It In Overtime As Colgate Upsets #11 Yale

Peter Bogdanich netted his second goal in overtime this year in the victory over Yale.

NEW HAVEN, CONN.  (3/1/09) – Peter Bogdanich (Burnaby, B.C.) netted his second overtime winner of the year 1:19 into the extra session to pace Colgate to a 3-2 upset over 11th-ranked Yale in ECAC Hockey action, Sunday afternoon at Ingalls Rink in front of a national television audience on ESPNU.

With the overtime, Colgate tied the national single season record set by Minnesota (16) during the 2007-08 campaign.  It also marks the 22nd game decided by one goal or less on the Raider schedule.

Brian Day (Danvers, Mass.) started the possession on the game winner by blocking a shot from out top by Nick Jaskowiak.  David McIntyre (Pefferlaw, Ont.) collected the puck and sent it back to Day, who skated into the offensive zone.  The sophomore fed Bogdanich who fired a one-timer into the right side of the cage that was protected by Alec Richards.  With the victory, Colgate successfully avenged an earlier 5-4 overtime loss to Yale at Starr Rink.

It didn't look good for the Raiders with five minutes left in regulation. Yale, which fell to 20-7-2 overall and 15-5-2 in league play, regained the lead at 15:21 after a scoring opportunity by Colgate on the previous possession. Sean Backman collected the puck off a rebound and put it in the right side of the cage.

However, the “cardiac kids” knotted the game once again at 18:08 as Bogdanich passed the puck in front of the net after winning a battle along the right boards and McIntyre one-timed it to the right side behind Richards.

After two scoreless periods, the Bulldogs took the lead 35 seconds into the third as Kevin Limbert wristed a shot from inside the left circle over the glove of Raider net minder Charles Long (Cleveland Heights, Ohio).

Colgate got on the board at 12:42 of the third as Day and McIntyre battled hard on the boards behind the cage, and kept the puck in the offensive zone.  Day gathered the puck and sent it out in front where Nick St. Pierre (St. Etienne, Que.) wristed a shot top shelf to beat Richards.  It was the senior's third of the year and his 60th career point as a Raider.

Yale, which will take the top seed into the ECAC Hockey Tournament, outshot Colgate 28-23 on the afternoon. Long saved 26 shots in the victory for Colgate, while Richards turned aside 20 in the loss.  Both teams went scoreless on the power play in four opportunities.

The Raiders, who finished the regular-season 11-16-7/6-11-5 in league play, return to action next Friday evening in the first round of the ECAC Hockey Tournament.  Colgate, the 10th seed, will travel to play Quinnipiac in the best of three series.
