HAMILTON, N.Y.(2/7/09) – Peter Bogdanich (Burnaby, B.C.) netted the game winner 55 seconds into overtime to pace Colgate to a 3-2 victory over visiting Quinnipiac, Saturday evening in men's hockey action at Starr Rink.
With the Raiders on the power play, the junior banged in a rebound from the right post off a shot by
David McIntyre (Pefferlaw, Ont.) for his second goal of the game and third of the season. It served as Bogdanich's second career multi-goal game. On November 23, 2007, he scored twice versus the University of Connecticut.
It was the second time Bogdanich has led the Raiders to an overtime victory over the Bobcats. On February 24, 2008, he banged home the winner with one minute left in overtime as Colgate upset then 19th-ranked Quinnipiac 4-3 in Hamden, Conn.
McIntyre finished the game with a goal and two assists as Colgate improved to 8-15-5 overall and 3-10-3 in league play. Quinnipiac suffered their second consecutive overtime defeat and fell to 14-12-2, 7-7-2 in ECAC Hockey action.
“Our first line played a lot of minutes tonight,” said Colgate head coach Vaughan. “McIntyre is a tremendous player and seemed to have an extra gear tonight. Bogs has great offensive instincts around the net and tonight we saw that in his two goals.
Brian Day also was a key for us tonight as he started to take some big face-offs down the stretch.”
With the Raiders trailing 2-1 and Quinnipiac on the power play, McIntyre knotted the game with 2:35 left in the second period with his 15th of the season. It was the junior's second shorthanded goal of the year and Colgate's sixth as a team. The Raiders cleared the puck from their defensive zone Bobcat goalie Dan Clarke came out of the net and attempted to clear the puck. McIntyre intercepted the failed clear attempt and fired the puck into the open net.
The Bobcats opened scoring 3:46 into the contest as Andrew Meyer found Jean-Marc Beaudoin backdoor and junior slid the puck in for this 12th of the year.
Colgate got the equalizer at 11:52 as McIntyre found Bogdanich from behind the net and the senior went five hole on Clarke for his second marker of the year.
On the power play, Quinnipiac regained the advantage at 2-1 as Scott Zurevinski deflected home a rebound off an initial shot from Matt Sorteberg at 12:08 of the second.
In first collegiate start,
Bryan Bessette (Melrose, N.Y.) saved a career-high 33 saves, including 14 in the final period to gain his first collegiate victory. The freshman's previous career-high was eight saves as a reserve in 15 minutes of action at St. Lawrence.
“I'm very happy for Bryan,” said Vaughan. “He has worked very hard in practice and earned this start. I'm sure he was a bit nervous at the start, but after he made some saves early, he calmed down. Bryan made the saves he had to make, including some very big ones in the third period.”
Clarke finished with 19 saves in the loss for the Bobcats. Quinnipiac outshot Colgate 35-22. Both teams went one of five on the power play.
With the victory, Colgate improved to 3-4-5 this season in overtime games. It was the Raiders' first overtime win against league competition.
Colgate returns to action, Friday evening as it travels to face Harvard. Opening face-off is set for 7 p.m. in Cambridge, Mass.
