HAMILTON, N.Y. (2/6/09) – Cam Ritchie netted his first goal of the season with 42 seconds left in overtime as 10th-ranked Princeton survived with a 3-2 victory over Colgate, Friday evening in ECAC men's hockey action.
On the power play, the sophomore used a few screens in front and blasted a shot from the point into the back of the cage for the game-winner.
Trailing 2-0 in the second period against the fourth-ranked scoring defense in the country, the Raiders made a valiant come back attempt and had a few chances late in the game to grab the victory.
Francois Brisebois (Montreal, Que.) wristed a shot from inside the left circle to beat Zane Kalemba top shelf with 6:32 remaining in the second period to get Colgate on the board.
David Sloane (Ambler, Pa.) and
Austin Smith (Dallas, Texas) received assists on the sophomore's seventh goal of the year. Prior to the end of the period, Colgate held a two-man advantage for 1:55, but only got two shots on net. Princeton went into intermission holding a 2-1 lead.
The Raiders got the equalizer 12:20 into the third period as the Colgate's top scorer,
David McIntyre (Pefferlaw, Ont.) banged the puck in the cage from the right side for his 14th goal of the year. The Raiders were about ready to go on the power play with a delayed call on Princeton upcoming, however the junior scored before the Tigers got possession of the puck.
Brian Day (Danvers, Mass.) and
Peter Bogdanich (Burnaby, B.C.) received assists on McIntyre's goal.
Colgate had a golden opportunity in the final half minute as Smith pushed a shot wide of what appeared to be an open right side of the cage.
The Tigers, now 16-6 overall and 10-5 in league play, took the lead with 16 seconds left in the first period as Dan Bartlett tallied his seventh of the year. Princeton upped its advantage 3:31 into the second period as Mark Magnowski pushed in his 10th in traffic from out front.
Princeton outshot Colgate 31-22, including holding a 5-1 advantage in the extra period. Kalemba turned aside 20 shots in the win, while Raider junior
Charles Long (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) saved 28 shots in 64:18 of action.
The game marked the Raiders' 11th overtime appearance of the season, which broke the single season mark of 10 set twice before – 2002-03 season and 2007-08 campaign. Colgate is 2-4-5 in overtime games, including falling twice to the Tigers this season.
The Raiders, 7-15-5 overall and 2-10-3 in league play, return to action Saturday evening as it hosts Quinnipiac. Opening face-off is set for 7 p.m. at Starr Rink.
