Jessi Waters (Menlo Park, Calif.) scored two goals including the game winner in overtime to give the Colgate women's hockey team a 7-6 win over Dartmouth Friday afternoon at Thompson Arena. The win gives Colgate 1-0 lead in the best of three ECAC Quarterfinals series.
Colgate (19-12-3, 12-7-3) scored four goals in the first, one in both the second and third periods before Waters finished the game 2:44 into overtime. Senior
Clancy Todd (Thorold, Ont.) found Waters with a perfect two-line lead pass leading to the breakaway goal.
Colgate lit the lamp first, registering a tally 1:28 into the first period to go on top 1-0. Junior
Beth Rotenberg (Toronto, Ont.) intercepted a pass in the Dartmouth zone and beat goaltender Carli Clemis unassisted through the five hole. The Big Green then tied the game four minutes later when Sarah Parsons slid one past freshman goaltender
Kimberly Sass (East Amherst, N.Y.). Colgate answered back with a pair of goals in a two-minute span to take a 3-1 lead. Senior
Laura Jansen (Wilmette, Ill.) found the back of the net off a rebound from junior
Katie Stewart (Exeter, Ont.) shot at the 6:42 mark, followed by a goal from senior
Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.).
The two teams split power-play goals as Colgate took a 4-2 lead into intermission. Senior
Kiira Dosdall (Fairfield, Conn.) scored off a slap shot from the top of the point to give the Raiders a two goal cushion after Dartmouth trimmed the lead to 3-2. Dosdall was assisted by Stewart and Hunt.
Dartmouth (16-9-4, 13-5-4) tied the score in the second 4-4 off a pair of power-play goals from Parsons, who finished with a hat-trick, before senior
Elin Brown (Calgary, Alta.) gave Colgate a 5-4 lead at the 18:03 mark. Brown was assisted by junior
Evan Minnick (Highlands Ranch, Colo.).
The Big Green again scored a pair of goals in the third including one from Amanda Trunzo with 13 seconds remaining to force overtime. Jenna Cunningham scored first for Dartmouth 1:35 into the period to knot the game 5-5. Waters scored her first of the game 11 minutes later to give the lead back to Colgate 6-5. Waters was assisted by Hunt who recorded a game high four points. The Raiders held that lead for nearly eight minutes before Trunzo scored with an extra attacker after Dartmouth pulled its goalie.
The Big Green out-shot Colgate 38-32. Colgate went 1-2 on the power-play, while the Dartmouth finished 3-5. Sass finished with 32 saves, while Clemis recorded 25 for Dartmouth.
Colgate returns to action tomorrow for game two of the series against Dartmouth. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
