HAMILTON, N.Y. (2/14/09) – Harvard's Sarah Wilson scored with 3:05 remaining in the third to give the Crimson a 2-1 win over the Colgate women's hockey team Saturday afternoon at Starr Rink.
The loss concludes the regular season home schedule for the Raiders as well as for eight seniors. Colgate finished the regular season with 12-5-1 record at home. The 12 wins is a new Colgate record.
Colgate (17-11-3, 11-6-3) tied the score 1-1, when sophomore
Hannah Milan (Great Barrington, Mass.) lit the lamp 2:27 into the third period. Sophomore
Jessi Waters (Menlo Park, Calif.) took the initial shot on Harvard goaltender Christina Kessler. Kessler made the save but gave the rebound up to Milan who registered her eighth tally of the season.
The Raiders then had a golden opportunity to take the lead six minutes later when Milan was tripped during a breakaway which led to a penalty shot at the 8:33 mark. Milan tried to go five-hole, but Kessler stood her ground and made a pad save to keep the score tied 1-1.
The Raiders who were out-shot 24-13 through the first two periods applied more pressure in the third out-shooting Harvard 13-12, but it wasn't enough.
Harvard (15-8-3, 14-4-2) opened the scoring as Jenny Brine tapped one past freshman goaltender
Kimberly Sass (East Amherst, N.Y.) at the 16:18 mark in the first period. Brine was assisted by Katherine Chute and Nora Sluzas.
Harvard out-shot the Raiders 36-26. Sass made 34 saves for Colgate as Kessler made 25 for the Crimson.
Colgate went 0-6 on the power-play, but was a perfect 5-for-5 on the penalty kill, including killing a Harvard two-man for 1:22 in the third period.
Colgate returns to action Friday, Feb. 20 at Union. The game is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
