HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/21/09) – Francois Brisebois (Montreal, Que.) posted his second goal of the game two minutes into the overtime period as Colgate upset #19 Princeton 5-4, Saturday evening at Starr Rink.
With the favorable result, the Raiders, who upped their record to 6-3-4 overall and 4-1-1 in ECAC Hockey play, ended a six-game losing streak against the Tigers that dated back to a 4-2 victory at Hobey Baker Rink on November 18, 2006. The five-goal effort was the most Colgate has scored against Princeton since a 7-3 win in Princeton on February 10, 2001.
Nick Prockow (Montreal, Que.) started the game-winning rush from the defensive end and moved the puck to Robbie Bourdon (Ile Bizard, Que.). The freshman broke into the offensive zone and connected a pass to a streaking Brisebois on the right side and the junior fired the puck into the empty right side of the cage for the winner.
Brisebois finished with a career-high three-point evening, while David McIntyre (Pefferlaw, Ont.) connected for two goals and an assist as well. Jeremy Price (Milton, Ont.) and Bourdon each tallied two assists for their first collegiate multi-point games.
It appeared Colgate was ready to close out Princeton in regulation, however, the Tigers had other things in mind. Goalie Alan Reynolds was skating towards the bench to give the Tigers an extra attacker. With 1:24 remaining, Mike Kramer deflected a shot from Jody Pederson from inside to knot the game at 4-4.
Princeton, which fell to 3-4-1 overall and 2-3-1 in league play, opened the scoring at 2:50 of the first period as Dan Bartlett slid a shot in between the left pad of Alex Evin (Castlegar, B.C.) and the post. It was the senior's third of the campaign.
Colgate got the equalizer at 11:52 as Bourdon passed the puck to Prockow who was standing behind the net and the sophomore stuffed the puck into the goal off Reynold's left skate. Brisebois was credited with a secondary assist.
Princeton went into intermission holding a 2-1 lead thanks in part Pederson's first of the year. The senior intercepted a failed clearing pass by the Raiders and sent a shot top shelf over Evin's glove from in the slot.
After Evin stopped a blast by Kevin Kaiser and Price made a defensive save as the puck bounced off Evin, the freshman sent a clearing pass to McIntyre, who broke into the offensive zone on a two on one with Brisebois. With the defender geared to take McIntyre, the senior faked a shot; made a move to get by him and then passed the puck to Brisebois, who slid it into the empty cage at 15:46.
Princeton took its final lead of the contest just 59 seconds into the third period as Bartlett scored his second of the evening. From that point on, it was all McIntyre. The senior netted his first of two at 4:05. Ethan Cox (Richmond, B.C.) and Austin Smith (Dallas, Texas) set up McIntyre, who unleashed a wrister from in the slot. Seventy six seconds later, the senior lit the lamp at 5:21 as McIntyre collected a rebound off a shot from Price and slide a backhander in behind Reynolds to give Colgate its first lead of the game at 4-3.
Colgate was outshot 47-27. Evin made a career-high 43 saves in the victory, besting his 41-save effort last year versus Yale. The sophomore made 21 of his saves in the second period. Reynolds turned aside 22 shots in the loss.
Princeton, who ranked second on the power play nationally heading into the weekend, scored once in six attempts, while the Raiders capitalized once in three tries. It marked the eighth consecutive game that Colgate had posted one power play goal.
The Raiders will return to action Tuesday night as it travels to face fifth-ranked Cornell. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in Ithaca. It will mark the fourth-consecutive nationally-ranked opponent for Colgate.
