HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/20/09) – Brian Day (Danvers, Mass.) tallied his seventh multi-goal game of his career, but it wasn't enough as visiting 13th ranked Quinnipiac snapped Colgate's six-game unbeaten streak with a 5-3 victory, Friday evening in an ECAC Hockey match-up between the league's top two teams.
Colgate, which fell to 5-3-4 overall and 3-1-1 in league action, trailed 4-1 heading into the third period. The Raiders rallied to make things interesting as Day pulled his squad within 4-2 with his fourth power play goal of the campaign and ninth score of the year at 5:53. Jeremy Price (Milton, Ont.) and Wade Poplawski (Winnipeg, Man.) each were credited with assists. Less than three minutes later at 8:33, David McIntyre (Pefferlaw, Ont.) and Kevin McNamara (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) worked the puck to Austin Smith (Dallas, Texas), who beat Eric Hartzell at the right post for his eighth of the season.
However, the comeback was thwarted at 17:44 as Colgate was whistled for too many men on the ice. The Bobcats took advantage and scored on their third power play goal of the evening as Yuri Bouharevich netted an unassisted goal at 19:06.
The Bobcats struck first at 8:30 of the opening period as Zach Davies executed a slap pass to Brandon Wong, who was parked on the doorstep at the left post. Quinnipiac, which improved to 9-1-0 overall, took that 1-0 lead into intermission.
Colgate got the equalizer at 3:40 of the second as Poplawski and McIntyre kept the puck in the Raiders' offensive zone and Day got control of the puck at the right wing boards; skated around the back of the net and wrapped it in behind Hartzell for his eighth of the year.
The Bobcats then took control of the contest with three consecutive goals 4:38 apart. Hartzell was credited with an assist on Jean-Marc Beaudoin's third of the campaign at 7:20. Jeremy Langlois tallied an even strength goal at 9:06 and a power play score at 11:58 to increase the lead to three.
Colgate outshot Quinnipiac 30-28. Hartzell made 27 saves in the victory, while Colgate starter Charles Long (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) saved 22. The senior was pulled for the last 8:02 of the second period following the Bobcats' fourth goal. Bryan Bessette (Melrose, N.Y.) finished off the second period with one save in his first action of the year in the cage. Long returned to make six stops in the final period.
Colgate returns to action Saturday evening as it hosts 19th-ranked Princeton. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Starr Rink. The game is scheduled to be televised on Time Warner Cable Sports out of Syracuse. Fans can received a free general admission ticket for the clash for bringing an unwrapped toy, or two canned food items.
