Long Tallies Career High Save Totals In 3-3 Draw With #11 Yale

Charles Long saved a career-high 41 versus Yale.
NEW HAVEN, CONN. (11/14/09)  – Charles Long (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) posted a career-high save total and Jason Williams (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) tallied a two-point evening as Colgate battled to a 3-3 overtime draw with 11th-ranked Yale, Saturday evening at Ingalls Rink.

With the tie, Colgate, now 5-2-4 overall and 3-0-1 in ECAC Hockey action, extended its non losing streak to six games.  During this stretch, the Raiders are 4-0-2.

Long, who was one save short of his career high last Saturday in the victory over Dartmouth, made sure his former best of 39 stops versus Quinnipiac in the opening round of the ECAC Hockey Tournament was bested this evening.  The junior stopped 41 of 44 shots thrown his way, including two in the overtime period to improve to 4-1-2 this season.

The Raiders jumped in front 2-0 in the opening period.  With Yale's Colin Dueck in the penalty box, it took less than a minute for Colgate's top line to light the lamp.  At 5:51, David McIntyre (Pefferlaw, Ont.) and Austin Smith (Dallas, Texas) teamed with Brian Day (Danvers, Mass.) for the junior's seventh of the season.

With teammate Jeremy Price (Milton, Ont.) in the box, Williams was credited with his second goal of the weekend and third of the campaign as his shot from the left circle deflected off Bulldog Sean Backman's skate in behind Nick Maricic for Colgate's second shorthanded goal of the year at 11:22.  The period ended with the Raiders leading 2-0.

After Yale cut the margin to 2-1 at 8:59, Colgate responded less than three minutes later with an even strength goal.  Robbie Bourdon (Ile Bizard, Que.) found the back of the cage at 11:21 from Williams and Ethan Cox (Richmond, B.C.) for the fourth time this season.  However, the two-goal lead was short-lived as Backman responded with his fourth of the year at 12:47 to pull the Bulldogs back within one.

With Colgate leading 3-2, the Bulldogs got the equalizer at 11:53 of the third as Thomas Dignard netted his first of the year.

The Raiders capitalized on its only power play of the evening, while Yale cashed in once in four man advantage opportunities.  The Bulldogs outshot Colgate 44-22.  Maricic saved 19 in the tie for Yale.

This result marks only the fourth time in the 84-game series history that a decision has ended with a tie.  It also serves as the third consecutive time these two schools have skated in an extra session.

Colgate, which broke the NCAA record for overtime games in 2008-2009 with 19, is ahead of last year's pace at this juncture of the season.  The Raiders have played four overtime games in their first 11.  Last year, Colgate didn't skate in its fourth overtime contest until the 15th game of the season.

The Raiders will return to action next weekend as they will play their final two homes games until January.  Colgate will host league rivals Quinnipiac and nationally ranked Princeton, Friday and Saturday evenings at Starr Rink.  Game time for both games is set for a 7 p.m. start.  The game with Princeton will be broadcasted over Time Warner Cable out of Syracuse.
