Women's Hockey Falls to #3 UNH in Season Opener

DURHAM, N.H. (10/9/09) -   The Colgate women's hockey team opened their 2009-10 schedule at third-ranked University of New Hampshire, falling to the Wildcats 4-0, Friday night at the Whittemore Center. 
 
The Wildcats recorded two power-play goals on the night, including one 5-on-3 goal in the first half. 
 
New Hampshire (3-0-0, 1-0-0) took a 1-0 lead halfway through the first period, when Courtney Birchard beat out Raiders goaltender Lisa Plenderleith (Ajax, Ont.) just seconds before the end of a 5-on-3 power play advantage.    Plenderleith closed the period with 13 saves to hold the Wildcats to their 1-0 lead.  
 
The Wildcats extended their lead in the second period, scoring three more goals, while going 1-1 on the power play.  Kristine Horn scored just 1:33 into the period, with New Hampshire's Micaela Long picking up her second assist on the night.  Julie Allen and Kailey Chappell each scored an even-strength goal to give the Wildcats a 4-0 lead at the end of the second period. 
 
The Raiders held the Wildcats scoreless in the final stanza as Plenderleith finished the night with 30 saves.  Lindsey Minton registered 10 saves in net for New Hampshire. 
 
The Raiders finished the night 0-7 on the power-play while the Wildcats went 2-4.  
 
Colgate (0-1-0, 0-0-0) will close out its opening weekend tomorrow, Oct. 10, when they travel to Chestnut Hill, Mass. to take on Boston College at 5 p.m.
