, N.Y. (1/10/09) – Junior Katie Stewart (Exeter, Ont.) scored with 1:41 remaining to give the Colgate University women's hockey team a must needed 2-1 win over rival Cornell Saturday at Lynah Rink. The win is the Raiders second on the road this season.

Colgate opened the scoring 4:20 into the game when senior Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.) found the back of the net over Cornell goaltender Kayla Strong. Senior Kiira Dosdall (Fairfield, Conn.) gained control of the puck at center ice and found Hunt entering the Big Red's zone. Hunt finished by skating around the initial defender before finding the top shelf over Strong's left side. Sophomore Hannah Milan (Great Barrington, Mass.) was also credited with an assist.

The Big Red got on the board mid-way through the second when Liz Zorn beat sophomore goaltender Lisa Plenderleith (Ajax, Ont.). Zorn camped out in front of Plenderleith during the Big Red's power-play before receiving pass from behind the net from Catherine White. Karlee Overgaurd was also credited with an assist.

Colgate had a couple opportunities in the second to regain the lead with three-on-one breakaways. Sophomore Jacquie Colborne (Calgary, Alta.) had shot saved and Hunt sent a shot past Strong but over the net. Cornell out-shot the Raiders 10-8 in the period.

Cornell (7-7-2, 3-4-2) opened the third period applying pressure in the Raiders zone. Colgate was able to withstand the pressure and score the game winning goal as Stewart beat Strong with 1:41 remaining. Stewart received a nice pass from freshman Krista Dermott (Milton, Ont.) who won possession of the puck off a dump-in to the left of Strong. Cornell pulled its goalie during the face-off, but had to return her after an icing call. Plenderleith made a save with 26 seconds remaining to seal the win.

The Raiders out-shot Cornell 36-22 as Colgate went 0-5 on the power-play and the Big Red 1-5. Plenderleith made 21 saves for the Raiders, while Strong made 34 for Cornell.

Colgate 9-9-2 overall 3-4-2 in ECAC returns to action tomorrow at Starr Rink for the finale of the home and home series against Cornell. The game is slated to begin at 3 p.m.
