Volleyball Defeats Dartmouth in Straight Sets

Raiders Capture Tournament Championship With 3-0 Victory

HAMILTON – In three closely contested sets, Colgate closed out the tournament with a 25-20, 28-26, 26-24 sweep over Dartmouth to finish as the Ellis Rowland Memorial Tournament champions.

The Raiders won through a well-rounded effort, earning 50 of their 57 points from kills. Tiana Owens led the way with 19, while Aubrey Anders and Jordyn Moore each logged 11. The defense was led by Hannah Langton with 19 digs, along with nine assists and one service ace. At the net, the Raiders totaled 10 block assists, led by Anders and Julia Headley with three apiece.




MOMENTS OF THE MATCH
  • Moore started the match for the Raiders with two back-to-back kills.
  • Langton served, helping Colgate earn five straight points on an Owens kill, service ace and block, along with two Big Green errors, to take a 7-3 lead.
  • Dartmouth chipped away at the deficit to trail by two, 10-8.
  • The Raiders earned two two-point rallies to take an 18-13 lead.
  • The Big Green stayed in the match by earning points, but Colgate collected three straight to win the first set, 25-20.
  • Momentum in the second set started in Dartmouth's favor, but two kills from Owens, along with kills from Moore and Stella Labrecque, gave Colgate its first lead of the set, 10-9.
  • Dartmouth secured small runs of points to take a 19-16 lead.
  • A critical kill from Moore and a block from Headley and Owens tied the set at 21.
  • The Big Green scored three points to the Raiders' one to enter set-point territory at 24-22.
  • Dartmouth's service error and Anders' kill leveled the set at 24.
  • The Big Green earned the set-point advantage twice more, but a pair of kills from Anders and a block assist from Labrecque and Anders secured the second set, 28-26.
  • Colgate trailed early in the third set, but four straight kills from Owens gave the Raiders a 6-4 lead.
  • Both teams went back and forth, making it difficult for either team to pull away.
  • Colgate led 17-15 before Dartmouth rallied to take a 20-19 advantage. The Raiders responded with three consecutive points to take a 22-20 lead.
  • Dartmouth leveled the set at 23 and 24, but kills from Owens and Headley gave the Raiders the third set, 26-24, and their second sweep of the season.
NOTES
  • Colgate averaged about 16 kills per set.
  • Owens led the team in kills with 19 while totaling 52 on the weekend.
  • Today's win marks the third time this season the Raiders have won after taking the first set.
  • This is the second time Colgate has swept a team this season. The other sweep also came against an Ivy League foe, Princeton.

The Raiders will remain home, embarking on Patriot League play Friday at noon against the Navy Midshipmen on Cotterell Court.
