Box Score 2 SAN DIEGO - The Colgate men's tennis team wrapped their Spring Break trip on Thursday, after competing against Point Loma and Northern Arizona during their time in San Diego. The Raiders fell 7-0 to PLU, then lost 6-1 to NAU, with the one win coming from first-year Tim Vargas.
COACH PENNINGTON'S COMMENTS
"The boys competed against two high quality teams on this spring break trip. We definitely came out quite flat for Point Loma and mentally and physically exhausted from our Holy Cross and Boston matches and adjusting to the outdoors. Credit to Point Loma as they are a high quality seasoned team."
"I thought Northern Arizona was significantly better overall level today, we hung in there in doubles and one through six singles despite number one Lochlan not playing. Great effort from Vargas to win his match today and
Wesley Nichols taking his match three sets. We also played a really high-quality first doubles match with Chung and Viding. Now we need to log in for Patriot League play as five of six remaining matches league."
Point Loma 7 Colgate 0
In doubles action, Point Loma jumped out to an early advantage at line three doubles, defeating the sophomore duo of Wesley Nichols and Lochlan Seth 6-1. They would clinch the point with a 6-2 win over senior captain Aidan Chung and sophomore Tim Viding, defeating them 6-2. Junior Parker McGowan and Vargas fell 7-6(2) in a tightly contested match at line two.
Point Loma continued their singles success, picking up a 6-0, 6-3 win over Vargas at line four. Junior Jerome Falcon fell 6-2, 6-4 at line six, and Seth fell 6-2, 6-2 at line one for Point Loma. Senior captain Aidan Lee would fall in straight sets at line two, as well as Chung at line five. First-year Wittman Bulger would win his first set, but fell 6-4, 3-6, (7-10) at line three.
Northern Arizona 6 Colgate 1
NAU picked up a quick win at line two doubles without dropping a game to take an early lead in doubles. Lee and Bulger teamed up for the first time at line three, but fell 6-3 at line three for NAU to take the doubles point. Chung and Viding fell 7-6(3) at line one.
Singles action opened with many tight first sets, with the Raiders taking two out of six courtesy of Nichols and Vargas. Falcon fell 6-3, 6-3 at line five, along with Lee at line one, 6-4, 6-3. NAU would then clinch the match 7-5, 6-3 over Chung at line four. Bulger fell 7-6(2), 6-3 at line two, and Nichols lost 6-4, 1-6, 0-6.
