Colgate Comes Up Short in 75-64 Loss to Holy Cross

Schiller matches a career-high 18 points

HAMILTON –
Colgate shot 56 percent from the floor in the second half against Holy Cross, but the Crusaders' strong first-half scoring led them to a 75-64 victory Wednesday night on Cotterell Court.

Colgate hit key 3-pointers throughout the game. Amarah Streiff went 3-5 from beyond the arc, and Madison Schiller went 2-5, combining for five of the team's seven made threes. Schiller also showcased her ability to score from all areas of the court, matching a career-high 18 points while shooting 8-13 from the field.

Of Colgate's 64 total points, 22 came from the bench. Taye Matthews led that effort with 13 points, while Laila Hankerson contributed six, and Ella Mahaffey added a trey.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Colgate opened the game by forcing four quick Holy Cross turnovers but could not convert offensively, as the Crusaders scored the first points with seven minutes remaining. Colgate's Ella Meabon responded with a jumper to put the Raiders on the board.

The Crusaders surged ahead with a fast-break layup, building an 8-2 advantage. Four more Raiders scored in the first quarter, but Hannah Griffin of Holy Cross sank a 3-pointer with just two seconds remaining to cement a 17-10 lead.

Holy Cross went on a quick 7-0 run to begin the second quarter, and its momentum was halted by Streiff's 3-pointer. The Crusaders added five more points before Schiller sparked a 7-0 run of her own, though Colgate still trailed 31-20 at halftime.

Colgate found its offense in the third quarter, but Holy Cross maintained its lead, outscoring the Raiders 19-18 in the period.

Both teams traded baskets to start the quarter, but back-to-back 3-pointers from Schiller and Meabon cut the double-digit deficit to nine, 39-30. Matthews went to work late in the third quarter for Colgate, scoring two field goals and a pair of free throws to send the Raiders into the final quarter trailing 50–38.

In Colgate's highest-scoring quarter of the game—26 points—the Crusaders secured a 75-64 victory. The fourth quarter was marked by frequent trips to the free-throw line for Holy Cross, which converted 14-of-16 attempts.

Despite Colgate's efforts, including late 3-pointers from Streiff and Mahaffey, Holy Cross pulled away to secure the road victory.
