Volleyball Prevails in Well-Rounded Performance, 3-1

Colgate avenge earlier-season loss to Army

HAMILTON – Colgate's well-rounded performance from every area of the court allowed the Raiders to take control of the game and top Army, 3-1, Sunday evening on Cotterell Court.

Their blocking game was unmatched, as six Raiders registered at least two blocks, led by Nina Gannon with 11 and Jordyn Moore with six. Moore also produced on the offensive end, leading the team with 12 kills on a .391 hitting percentage.

Successful offense and defense would not be possible without the libero and setters. Hannah Langton cleaned the floor as she totaled 32 digs throughout the match, setting up Ava Schabes and Reagan Knipling to combine for 38 of the team's 43 assists.

Colgate avenged its earlier-season loss to Army with tonight's 3-1 victory over the Black Knights. Colgate took the first set, 25-19, before Army found the equalizer in set two, 25-18. Undeterred, the Raiders cleaned up the final two sets, winning 25-22 and 25-14 to earn three wins on the week.

Set 1 | Colgate 25, Army 19
  • In a contested first set, Jordyn Moore and Nina Gannon recorded a pair of early block assists to keep the Raiders ahead, 3-2.
  • Two separate two-point runs by the Raiders helped build a two-point cushion, 7-5.
  • With Colgate's largest lead of the set at 14-8, the Raiders registered three kills, one from Moore and two from Aubrey Anders, along with two more block assists from the Moore and Gannon combination.
  • Army earned a slew of points, but Coach Baker's successful challenge, which was overturned in Colgate's favor, gave the Raiders a 17-11 advantage.
  • The Raiders used their early lead to close out the set, 25-19, earning all of their points from kills, led by Tiana Owens with four.
Set 2 | Army 25, Colgate 18
  • With both teams earning early points, Army started to build a gap, capitalizing on the Raiders' attacking errors to lead, 11-3.
  • Colgate embarked on a comeback, earning two points on three different occasions, including a service ace from Julia Oster, to trail 12-7.
  • Out of the media timeout, the Raiders outplayed the Black Knights, 5-2, forcing Army to use a timeout as Colgate climbed out of the deficit, 18-13.
  • The teams competed neck and neck toward the end of the set, but Army's early lead helped the Black Knights claim set two, 25-18.
Set 3 | Colgate 25, Army 22

  • The Raiders capitalized on three Black Knights attacking errors, including another successful challenge from Coach Baker, to lead, 8-5.
  • Colgate edged ahead at 10 and 14, but Army found a way to chip away at the deficit, tying the score at both points as Colgate headed into the media timeout with a 15-14 lead.
  • Using that momentum, Colgate strung together three more points, including a service ace from Anders, to lead, 18-14.
  • Colgate's versatility in scoring through kills, Black Knights attacking errors, blocks and service aces allowed the Raiders to pull away and take set three, 25-22.
Set 4 | Colgate 25, Army 14
  • In an accurate start to the fourth set, both teams traded kills before a Black Knights service error tied the match, 3-3.
