Late Goal Keeps Colgate Unbeaten

Erik Ronning becomes winningest coach in men's soccer history

HAMILTON - Colgate University edged Binghamton University 1-0 on Thursday at Beyer-Small '76 Field.

The Raiders netted the game's only goal in the second half, securing the win against the Bearcats. Colgate's defense held strong as Eric Widrick recorded four saves to maintain the clean sheet.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Binghamton was able to create a quality chance early in the match but Eric Widrick was able to keep it out.
  • Colgate created its first shot of the match 20 minutes in through a shot from Cason Stafford but the Bearcats keeper was equal to it.
  • Binghamton edged Colgate in shots 3-2 at the halftime break but the score remained 0-0 after 45 minutes.
  • As the rain began to pour down in the second half, neither team was able to create any high quality chances.
  • Binghamton came close with nine minutes left on a free kick that went just wide of the left post.
  • With less than eight minutes left, Colgate won a penalty kick off a free kick from Drew Stephans. Blake Pipkin stepped up and rifled the penalty kick off the right post, the rebound found the foot of Conor Geraghty who made no mistake and put it into the back of the net.
  • Moments later, the Bearcats hit a bouncing ball in the box and it rattled the crossbar.
  • The Bearcats continued to press with a series of shots and corners in the closing minutes, but Colgate maintained its defensive stance to secure a 1-0 victory.
GAME NOTES

  • Eric Widrick secured his third clean sheet of the season and has allowed just one goal in the opening four matches.
