Colgate Falls to Lafayette in High-Scoring Affair

Raiders drop 59-42 decision in Easton

EASTON, Pa. –
Lafayette scored 17 unanswered points in the second quarter to build a double-digit lead it never relinquished in a 59-42 decision Saturday afternoon at Fisher Stadium.

Colgate put up more than 400 yards of offense for the sixth time this season and first-year wide receiver Matt Fogler caught three touchdown passes but it wasn't enough to overcome more than 260 rushing yards from Lafayette's Kente Edwards and 533 total yards from the Leopards.

A busy first quarter started with dominant runs from Lafayette's Edwards. He had over 130 rushing yards in the opening frame and made it 14-0 Leopards with a 29-yard scamper with 3:50 remaining.

Colgate responded with a six-play 65-yard drive capped by a 34-yard catch and run from reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Week Fogler to slice the deficit in half, 14-7. Jake Stearney had three completions on the drive to Mason Mozo and Fogler (2) along with a 12-yard rush.

On the first play of Lafayette's ensuing drive, Reece Allan picked off Dean DeNoble to set up the Raiders with great field position. Zach Osborne barrelled in from two yards out on the first play of the second quarter to draw even at 14-14.

The teams traded touchdown drives on the next three possessions. Osborne and Stearney, alternating plays under center, orchestrated a 10-play, 75-yard drive that ended with a burst from Fogler who outran defenders for his second score of the game to tie the game at 21-21.

Lafayette once again leaning on Edwards reclaimed a 28-21 lead on a 39-yard touchdown from DeNoble to Zane Wooldridge with 3:43 remaining in the first half. Two Stearney interceptions on consecutive possessions helped Lafayette tack on 10 more to lead 38-21 at halftime.

Colgate needed a spark and got one from its senior captain – Elijah Hamilton blocked and recovered a punt on Lafayette's first second-half possession. Four plays later Stearney ripped a strike to a wide open Reed Swanson in the end zone to trim the deficit to 38-28.

Unfortunately that was as close as the Raiders would get. Lafayette scored 14 unanswered points to go up 52-28 midway through the fourth quarter. First-year quarterback Jackson Kilburg threw the first two touchdowns of his Colgate career late in the game. Michael Stevenson caught his first career touchdown with 22 seconds left, pushing the game to its final score, 59-42.

Swanson once again led Colgate with nine receptions for 96 yards with a touchdown. Brady Hutchison had eight catches for 47 yards. Fogler's three touchdowns highlighted his five-reception, 77-yard showing. Jake Stearney was 22-of-37 with three touchdowns and two interceptions, while Kilburg finished 9-for-10 for 84 yards with two touchdowns playing most of the fourth quarter.

NOTES
  • Colgate eclipsed 400 yards of total offense for the sixth time this season and its 42 points were its most since a 41-21 win over Cornell on Oct. 4.
  • Matt Fogler became the first Raider to catch three touchdown passes since Thomas Ives grabbed a trio against Georgetown in November 2017.
  • Jake Stearney matched his career high with three touchdown passes, which he set two years ago here at Lafayette (11/4/23).
  • Jackson Kilburg in his first time under center for the Raiders finished 9-for-10 with two touchdowns and 84 yards.
  • Tyler Fontenot bombed a season- and career-high 58-yard punt in the first quarter.
  • Reece Allan's interception in the first quarter was the first of his career.

UP NEXT
Colgate (4-6, 2-3 Patriot) is back home for its final two games of the regular season starting next Saturday when the Raiders host No. 4 Lehigh at 1 p.m.
