Colgate Tops Siena in Season Opener, 53–43

Shannon Bush earns her first career win as a head coach

LATHAM, N.Y. — In a contested match-up, Colgate pulled away from Siena by playing as a team, racking up nine assists and getting a lift from senior Anne Bair, who sank eight of 10 free throw line late in the fourth quarter. The 53–43 victory marked a milestone moment for head coach Shannon Bush, her first career win at the helm.

The Raiders locked in defensely, dominating the boards with 45 total rebounds. Abbey Ferguson led the way, pulling down a career-high 10. Siena had a hard time generating its rhythm on offense, shooting just 15–60 from field goal range and 2–19 beyond the arc.

COACH BUSH'S COMMENTS
"I am very proud of the resilience of our group on the road tonight. We talk about it taking everyone for us to have success and tonight we proved it. We had several players step off the bench in key moments.

"I am so happy for our team and the way that they have shown up for each other leading up to this first contest. We are looking forward to getting back to Hamilton and back to work."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Both offenses were slow to get going, but Ella Meabon squared up beyond the arc to nail a three-pointer and cash in on the first points of the season. Of the 14 lead changes in the game, nine came in the first half. In the final seconds of the first, Bair drove the lane for a good layup to push Colgate ahead, 12–11.

Bair and Ferguson knocked down mid-range jumpers to help extend Colgate's lead, 16–13. The Saints rallied back, capitalizing on a string of Raider turnovers and free throws to pull ahead 23–20. Lara Cook buried a tying three pointer to enter halftime at 23 apiece.

Colgate found its rhythm coming out of the half, nearly doubling up Siena, 15–8. Hot hands from Amarah Streiff and Meabon combined for nine points, giving the Raiders their largest lead yet, 38–31.

The Saints tied the game at 40 on a tip-in layup, but Colgate fought back to take a five-point advantage as Siena's demise began with two minutes remaining. Bair was sent to the foul line five times, adding eight key points for Colgate. The Raiders picked up their first win of the season in a 53–43 showdown to improve their overall record to 1–0.
