Raiders End Regular Season with 3–1 Win Over Mids

Colgate heads into postseason play as the No. 2 seed

HAMILTON  — Colgate powered past Navy 3-1 on Saturday at Cotterell Court. The Raiders recorded a season high of in the second set, holding the Mids to just 10 points.

After dropping the first set, Colgate rebounded to win the next three sets, 3–1. The Raiders' attack was led by a .303 hitting percentage, and the team recorded 14 total blocks. 

COACH BAKER'S COMMENTS
"We played very clean volleyball in the last three sets.  It was a total team effort.  Navy is a very good team who has an efficient offense and we knew we were going to have to be locked in defensively.  I thought our team was focused and ready to go.  I'm excited to watch us compete for a championship on the road."

Set 1 | Navy 25, Colgate 19
Colgate opened the first set trying to counter the Midshipmen's initial momentum. After trailing 7–0, the Raiders finally got on the board from a Navy service error. Tiana Owens and Milan Bayless responded with key kills, narrowing the gap to 13–10. Despite a steady offensive push, the Raiders committed several service errors that hindered their ability to regain the lead.

As the set progressed, Frances Torres and Owens delivered crucial kills to keep Colgate competitive, eventually tying the score at 18–18. However, Navy capitalized on the Raiders' errors and re-established their lead with a series of successful attacks to take set one, 25–19.

Set 2 | Colgate 25, Navy 10
Maddie Rudolph's service ace set the tone early, and Owens consistently followed with a series of key kills, supported by Deren Cukur's assists. Owens' performance stood out as she notched a new career high in kills during this game. Bayless and Lal Akin faded blocks that helped force a string of Navy attack errors. A late 7–0 run by the Raiders, featuring a service ace by Aubrey Anders, helped Colgate surge ahead. Colgate led the second set decisively, 25–10.

Set 3 | Colgate 25, Navy 11
Colgate took control of the third set with a strong run, led by Owens, who contributed multiple kills, pushing the score to 9–3. Rudolph's service ace further extended the lead. Ava Schabes also made an impact with crucial assists and a kill, helping Colgate maintain momentum. Despite a few scoring responses from Navy, the Raiders' consistent pressure and defensive blocks from Akin and Owens kept them ahead. Colgate dominated the set in a 25–11 win.

Set 4 | Colgate 25, Navy 17
Bayless initiated the momentum with a kill assisted by Cukur, and Torres extended the lead with another successful kill. Akin pushed Colgate ahead 6–1 off a solo block. Navy retaliated with five straight points to tie the match up at six. The Raiders capitalized off of multiple scoring runs to build on their advantage. The Raiders maintained their lead with contributions from Akin and Owens, who each executed pivotal blocks. Anders delivered a service ace to bring up match point. Akin and Bayless delivered the final block of the game, sealing the 25–17 win.

GAME NOTES
  • Owens led Colgate with 23 kills on 44 attempts, achieving a hitting percentage of .432 and contributing a team-high 25 points. This performance marked a new career-high for Owens in both kills and points. 
  • Rudolph added six kills and three service aces, while also recording five total blocks.
  • Akin made a significant impact at the net, finishing with nine total blocks. 
  • Cukur facilitated the offense with 24 assists, supporting the team's overall performance.

UP NEXT
Colgate holds an 18-9 overall record with a 13-3 mark in Patriot League play. This game was the last regular season match before the playoffs start, and with this victory, Colgate clinched the second seed and a first-round bye in the playoffs.
