HAMILTON – The Colgate women's basketball team fell narrowly to the American Eagles, 56-54 at Cotterell Court on Saturday afternoon.
Tiasia McMillan led the Raiders in scoring for the third straight game finishing with 12 points and adding seven boards.
COACH ADEDUNTAN'S COMMENTS
"We were doing a lot of good things defensively, we were back to us. We were playing really hard, a couple missed opportunities, rebounding, obviously at the end there too. The highlight on the stat sheet is turnovers. Can't shoot the ball if you turn the ball over and give it to the other team.
Second chances and a little bit less turnovers give them [American] more opportunities.
[On the end of the game] We wanted to get a steal. Stretch the game out as long as possible. We were able to get a steal but we got a good look, but it was unfortunate the way it played out. We know rebounding is the name of the game, you lose games if you don't rebound and win games if you do."
HOW IT HAPPENED
Colgate jumped out to an 11-4 lead midway through the first quarter thanks to a 9-0 run. Alexa Brodie hit a 3-pointer to get the run started while Ella Meabon, Tiasia McMillan, Christina Midgette each chipped in two points. The Raiders allowed American to take a 15-13 lead after one quarter.
Morgan McMahon scored six straight Raiders points to get Colgate within one point halfway through quarter two. Taylor Golembiewski and Brodie each hit pull-up jumpers to keep the game within reach as Colgate trailed 27-26 at halftime. McMahon scored all eight of her points in the second quarter.
The third quarter began with an American run that saw the Raiders trail by as many as nine before going on a run of their own. Colgate still trailed 46-40 after the third quarter.
Colgate and American continued trading blows throughout the fourth quarter before Brodie stole a late inbound and sprung Madison Schiller into a fast-break open layup cutting the deficit to just two points with four ticks left. After a number of fouls from the Raiders, American missed the two consecutive foul shots however, Colgate couldn't grab the rebound and time ran out.
The Raiders offense was led by two double-digit scorers, McMillan (11) and Golembiewski (11).
Sophia Diehl grabbed 10 boards matching her season high and dished out four assists. Brodie finished with nine points, two rebounds, and two steals. Schiller netted six points and chipped in three rebounds.
