Colgate Completes 5-1 PL Season With Win Against Fordham

Raiders have best offensive day of 2021 on Senior Day

Hamilton, N.Y. -  Colgate Football honored its 26 seniors before kickoff, but it was a freshman who stole the statistical show. Michael Brescia threw for a career high 193 yards and in the process tossed his first collegiate touchdown pass to Joshua Szott and followed it up with a TD strike to Myles Bradley.  Brescia led the team in rushing with 28 carries piling up 162 yards and two touchdowns. That catch by Szott was his first in the endzone as the senior finished with three catches for 40 yards. Running back Max Hurleman had a career day rushing for 84 yards and picking up his first TD, a four-yard run.

Overall, the Raiders offense amassed 496 yards, the most since Nov. 3, 2018 when Colgate steamrolled Fordham 41-0 picking up 562 yards at Jack Coffey Field. Colgate also shined in the ground game today with 290 yards, the most since — you guessed it, that same game in the Bronx when the Raiders ran for 364.

The Colgate defense enjoyed their most opportunistic day of the season creating five turnovers. Collin Heard's goal line interception ended Fordham's first offensive possession while Owen Goss and Trevor Thompson both added their first career picks. William Gruber secured the first of two Raider fumble recoveries early in the second quarter. Connor Meyer put the game away with a 12-yard scoop and score after K2 Dickens dislodged the ball from Rams quarterback Tim DeMorat. Colgate won 45-31 after leading at the half 23-21. Colgate never led in the first half until Spencer Biscoe connected on a 24-yard field goal as the second quarter clock hit zero.

Record-setting Rams quarterback DeMorat paced the Fordham offense throwing for 350 yards and two touchdowns, finishing the season with a Patriot League leading 31 scores. Fordham had two receivers eclipse 100 receiving yards, MJ Wright and Dequece Carter. After being predicted to finish last in the Patriot League, Colgate secured sole possession of second place with a 5-1 Patriot League mark, 5-6 overall. Fordham fell to 6-5 overall, 4-2 in the Patriot League. Colgate's only conference defeat came to Holy Cross, the League Champions at 6-0 after beating Bucknell 45-6.

Fred '50 and Marilyn Dunlap Head Coach Stan Dakosty

"5-1 is a great finish. After we lost to Holy Cross we challenged the guys and with a three game season, we told them let's go 3-0 and build momentum for our program. The team bought in all year, they fought for each other. They're a special group of players. Our standard here is championships; it's always going to be that here, but what they did this year, after everything they've been through over the past year and a half, they kept fighting and never wavered. There have been a lot of great Colgate teams that have finished 5-1 in the league, and they can be very proud of that and I am very proud to be their coach."

Heavy Hearts
Before the game, Colgate observed a moment of silence for Marilyn Dunlap, wife of legendary Colgate football Coach Fred Dunlap. Marilyn passed away earlier this week at the age of 91.
