"Obviously, we'd love to have 27 from Lauryn any night, but it's not what we expect," Colgate head coach
Nicci Hays Fort said of her assist specialist. "If we can just get her to look to attack and always take her open shots, then she's going to have a really good senior year."
Shooting Touch Too Much
The Raiders were hanging with Harvard into the second media timeout of the opening half, trailing 21-17 with 11:12 showing. But the Crimson caught fire over the next 3:16, outscoring Colgate 15-6 thanks to four made 3-pointers during that sizzling stretch.
"Harvard's really good, so we had to try to pick who not to guard," Hays Fort said. "We tried to do that in the first half and we had great help, but then they were able to skip it and they made nine threes.
"We take pride in guarding the 3-point line and tonight that just got away from us a little bit."
Colgate entered the game second in the Patriot League in 3-point field goal defense, allowing a 27.9-percent success rate. But Harvard connected on 9-of-14 from long range in the first half and 12-of-22 for the game.
Harvard made 19-of-29 overall (65.5 percent) from the field in the first half and led 49-36 at intermission.
"It's going to be hard to win games when you let someone shoot 65 percent in either half," Hays Fort said.
Even though the Crimson cooled down to 51.6 percent by game's end, it still was the best shooting night against the Raiders this season.
Harvard scored the first five points of the second half and Colgate drew no closer than the halftime margin until Jones converted a 3-point play with just 1:49 to play that made it 84-72. The Crimson maintained their double-digit advantage and improved to 5-1 this season.
With the win, Harvard head coach Kathy Delaney-Smith secured her 500th career coaching victory.
