Women’s Basketball Set Back by American 69-49

HAMILTON, N.Y. (2/12/11) – The Colgate women's basketball team experienced a 69-49 setback when it fell to American on Saturday afternoon in Cotterell Court.

Senior Sami Kozlowski led the Raiders in scoring with nine points in the game while classmate Krista Moser was second with eight points and a team-best 10 rebounds.

Colgate (7-17, 2-8 PL) got on the scoreboard first with a pair of free throws in the first minute of play to take the 2-0 lead. American then answered back with a jumper followed by a quick steal and a basket to take the 4-2 lead. With the momentum on their side, the Eagles then went on a run that gave then gave them a 7-4 advantage at the 17-minute mark. The Raiders soon found their offensive rhythm, tying the game at 9-9 minutes later. Both teams continued to trade baskets with Colgate being the more productive of the two and within four minutes, the Raiders had taken a 17-13 lead. American soon reclaimed the lead minutes later to put the score at 22-19 and then with 6:28 left on the clock, exploded offensively with a 16-2 run in the final minutes to take the 38-21 advantage at half time.

Similar to the first half, Colgate opened scoring with a jumper. However, still carrying their momentum from the first half, the Eagles replied with 5-0 run over the next minute to extend the scoring margin to 20 points. The teams continued to battle it out on the court, with both teams making some strong defensive plays on both ends of the court and by the 11:04 mark American held the 54-35 lead. The Raiders continued to play hard, making some aggressive plays and collecting some strong offensive rebounds but could not close the gap, eventually falling to the Eagles 69-49.

"American had a great shooting night," state head coach Pamela Bass. "We did a better job on the boards but we still need to focus on our finish."

Colgate had a 34.0 field goal percentage, going 10-23 in the first half and 18-53 in the second. The team shot 42.9 percent from the charity stripe.

The Raiders will resume play at home when they host Lehigh on Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. on Cotterell Court.
