HAMILTON, N.Y. (12/22/11) – Three Raiders scored in double-figures but it wasn't enough as the Colgate women's basketball team fell to St. Bonaventure 68-49 Thursday afternoon at Cotterell Court. The Raiders held a 35-30 lead in the second half before the Bonnies responded with 22-6 run and never looked back.
Freshmen
Mariah Jones and
Missy Repoli scored 11 points apiece, while senior
Kelly Korkowski finished with 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots to lead the Raiders.
Tricia Oakes also pitched in six points, eight rebounds and one blocked shot, while
Candice Green dished out a season-high seven assists.
St. Bonaventure (11-1) opened the game with a 17-2 run in the first six minutes of action, before the Raiders responded with a 23-8 run, including a three-pointer from Jones, to tie the score 25-25 with 4:08 left. The Bonnies then held onto a slim 27-26 lead in the closing seconds before Green made a 15-foot jumper from the baseline and Korkowski blocked the half court attempt at the buzzer to give Colgate a 28-27 halftime lead.
Colgate (2-11) then built its largest lead of the game 33-28 to start the second half and maintained a five point lead 35-30 with 17 minutes remaining, before the Bonnies went on a 22-6 run to lead 52-41 with 7:14 left. Repoli then responded with a three-pointer to trim the lead to 52-44, but St. Bonaventure was able to close the game with a 16-5 run to extend it winning streak to seven games.
The Bonnies were led by Amelia Horton and Chelsea Bowker who score 15 points apiece, while Jessica Jenkins and Alaina Walker both scored 11. Horton also led the Bonnies with eight rebounds, while Jenkins recorded three steals.
Colgate finished the game shooting 41.2 percent, while holding the Bonnies to 38.8 percent, but lost the battle on the boards 35-32, including 20-13 in the second half. St. Bonaventure also made 19 more trips to the charity stripe where it shot 86.4 percent (19-22), while the Raiders shot 66.7 percent (2-3).
The Raiders will host Iona on Thursday, Dec. 29. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at Cotterell Court and will be streamed live on Colgate All-Access.
