Women's Basketball Tops NJIT 54-44

NEWARK, N.J. (12/18/11) – Senior center Tricia Oakes recorded her fifth career double-double as the Colgate women's basketball team won its second straight game by topping NJIT 54-44 Sunday afternoon at the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.

Oakes finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds, while Mariah Jones scored a game-high 16 points to lead the Raiders. Freshman Kelly Reid also scored in double figures with 10 points while grabbing seven rebounds. Senior Kelly Korkowski led the Raiders on the glass with 12 rebounds, while pitching in four points.

Colgate (2-10) opened the game with a 5-0 run in the first three minutes of action, after a three-pointer from Candice Green and a layup by Korkowski, before the Highlanders responded with a 6-0 run to take their first lead of the game 6-5 with 13:47 remaining in the half. Both teams then exchanged baskets for the next five minutes, as the score was tied 12-12, before Green connected from downtown to put the Raiders up 15-12 with 8:49 remaining. Colgate would extend its lead to 17-12, before the Highlanders responded with a 5-1 run to trim the lead to 18-17 with 3:25 left, but that was as close as it would get as the Raiders closed the half with a 10-1 run, including a layup by Reid at the buzzer, to enter the locker room with a 28-18 lead.

NJIT (4-5) started the second half with a 15-4 run to take the lead 33-32 with 12:16 remaining in regulation. But the Raiders responded with quick 6-0 run to regain the lead 38-33 with 11:00 left. Colgate then extended its lead to 43-33 after Lauryn Kobiela drained a three-pointer with 7:28 left. The Highlanders would answer back with a 7-2 run to make the score 45-40, but Colgate closed the game with a 9-4 run to secure its second win of the season.

NJIT was led by Uju Nwanko who scored 14 points, while Rayven Johnson grabbed 11 rebounds.

Colgate finished the game shooting 35.6 percent, while holding the Highlanders to 27.9 percent. Colgate won the battle on the boards 46-37, but turned the ball over 20 times while dishing out 12 assists.

The Raiders will return home to face St. Bonaventure on Thursday, Dec. 22. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at Cotterell Court and will be streamed live on Colgate All-Access.
